Series 9 Set Reports Thread (SPOILERS)

As a long time fan of Doctor Who, I'm struggling to get particularly enthusiastic about Series 9 based on what I've heard so far.

The Missy character never especially thrilled me, so having her back as a recurring villain is bad news (if nothing else, it spoils the one good moment in the Series 8 finale where CyberBrig casually blows her to pieces - which is both a nice throwback to his "Nice to be seeing you again [WALLOP]" in the Five Doctors and a rather poetic end to Sir Alistair's character arc). I always felt she would have been better as the Rani or as an independent character rather than the Master (and the "reveal" was little of the sort since it appeared that many fans had sussed out the Missy -> Mistress -> Master gimmick from the moment the Deep Breath scripts were leaked).

Overall, I just want to see Steven Moffat step down. As was mentioned earlier, Russell T Davies did four-and-a-bit series then moved on, whereas his successor has now done five series (plus the Golden Anniversary) and apparently has already bagged a sixth. There has developed a large segment of fandom who feel that his time has long passed.

Meh, I never for once believed Missy was truly dead when Cyber Brigadier shot her. The Master always survives death. Always.

Me neither.
The special effect screamed transmat to me.

I knew they wouldn't kill him / her off after all that build up and I have to confess that for a moment, I feared I might be wrong. But so far what I've read about this upcoming season has me excited as to what his / her role is and I suspect The Master will the be The Doctor's long way around home.

If they were truly going to kill off Missy/The Master in that scene, I think they would have actually made the Doctor do it. She wouldn't have been shot from some surprise character off screen.

I know the Master will always come back somehow, but I hoped there would be some time before his/her next appearance rather than IMMEDIATELY putting Missy in the next series.

The Master has been more or less gone since 1996, stopping by for two episode arcs in the last ten years before Missy showed up. Back in the Third Doctor era, he was basically a regular. So give the Master a chance to be herself for a bit rather than just once every Doctor encounter. End of Time was nearly the 11th Doctor's time and was the last we saw of the Master until the 12th Doctor arrived.

So apparently the Gatiss' episode has been shot 'Peep Show' style entirely in character POV shots.

And given that they seem to have shot it very quickly and are already back on the Finale I wonder if this is a sneaky way of doing a Doctor and Companion-lite episode, since they can do a few shots on set then ADR the rest later?

Hmm, so they are setting up this morning for shooting at the Diner in Cardiff Bay that they've used a few times already but the interesting thing is they've put up the Utah backdrop that the used for when they shot 'The Impossible Astronaut' there outside the window.

Edit: Second interesting thing. Jenna is dressed up as a waitress. Clara splinter saving the 11th Doctor?

Edit 2: And another new outfit for Capaldi. He really is channeling Pertwee on all fronts.

I think it would be really trippy if the 11th doctor with Amy, Rory and River JUST miss waitress Clara arriving for work.

The 11th doctor and gang are going to 1969

The 12th doctor arrives to meet waitress Clara

Does that mean waitress Clara failed to save the Doctor in that instance? ;)

A lot of photos here

Seems the electric guitar is going to be a thing of twelve's.

Makes sense since Capaldi was in a band

Or Clara did save him. He stepped out to get his special straw. "It adds more fizz". Amy, Rory, and River had gone there again to find out who the first invite had gone. Then the Doctor steps in surprised to see them.

Clara could have made sure he didn't run into his older self, or his companions before he was suppose to. Or she helped the older Doctor with something and he just didn't catch her face. The fragments did say something about he never hears me....almost never. She usually saves him by being there to change something small. Get him to look away. Turn left. Distract whatever the Great Intelligence threw there to kill the Doctor. Just enough so his doesn't die or regenerate at the wrong time.

(I still wanted to see Fergeson interview Capaldi after becoming the Doctor. Two old bandmates that are massive Who fans, allowed to talk about it on national TV.)

Looking at that photo of Capaldi in completely different clothes and sporting a backpack I can't shake this crazy thought that neither of them are playing their regular character...

It couldn't be another "John Smith fob watch" situation could it? With Clara as a waitress keeping an eye on the Doctor like Martha did in that 2-parter?

Nah. They wouldn't do that story again.

Assuming for a second that I'm not just insane it would have to be connected to the whole "Where does he get his face from?" story that no one (save Moffat) was crying out for.
