A New Zealand government panel has selected 40 flags out of 10 292 submitted by the public for further consideration as the new national flag. Out of the selected 40 flags, 4 flag designs will be selected for a two part referendum.

The two part referendum will be by postal ballot. The first vote in November 2015 will pick the most popular choice from the final four. The second vote in March 2016 will pit the existing flag against the most popular alternative.

One of the reasons for New Zealand choosing a new flag is that their current flag looks similar to the Australian flag.

All the existing flags might have to be replaced?

This sounds like the work of Big Flag's lobbyists pressuring the weaklings in Wellington again.

I don't care, so does anyone want to buy my vote?

I vote for 10. They stole our southern cross idea and they can just live without it now.

    Your idea?

You only beat us by a year (1901 and 1902 respectively), and we were both ripping off the standard default licence plate that boats had to fly at the time to prove that they were part of the empire.

Since this is a question of laziness, we win, because we were lazier for a year longer than you were.

Isn't it really odd how super low tech that this thingy is, that it's being sorted by NZPost?

Well, it works for NZ Idol.

I'd almost think that it's to discourage young drunk horny idiots from voting, so that only wise, well thought out, over 60 pillars of the community will control the destiny of the country.

Quite a few flags around the world look similar to each.

I honestly think the number 12 is the best one from those:),
the green color makes the most sense somehow.
The numbers 15 and 21 are not bad either.

I also like no 35 as it has a stylized union jack that has some maori influence.

The fern is cute but lacks gravitas. It's something I'd expect to see on the uniform of a girl guide (after she's learnt how to make a complex knot with a fern).

I think the national flag of New Zealand should be the film "The Frighteners."

Because other than the trees, and mountains, that movie has very little to do with us.

I suppose those of us living in Aus won't be allowed to vote. I guess it's kind of fair. I do go for the Wallabies after all.

I'd vote for... meh.. actually they all kind of suck. I've been gone to long to know what the significance of the curly things are (might ask a 'real' kiwi tomorrow).

Being a fan of the All Blacks i prefer flag 11 but it may be too specific (not that it relates exclusively to the All Blacks).

I know too little about NZ history and customs to judge which one would represent the country most but i like most designs.

However it's interesting that only one design actually features the Union Jack, and even then greatly redesigned ;)

I think 35 is the only one that should be considered.

I might just have to move to NZ. If this is the biggest thing they have to worry about, it must be a utopia.

Another option is to go ahead with the New Zanada idea and use that flag.

Including the vintage-looking dirt in that pic? :p

Nice hipster flag. You can only buy it used.
