New Zealand choosing new flag

Can't say I'm a fan of the black and white flags. They don't look right from a vexillological standpoint, but the colors mean something else entirely to New Zealanders so I'm sure they'll perform well.

The Koru flags all look like waves and should be in some yacht club or some shitty Florida home owner's association.

Personal favorite is 6. But I think 8 will do well in the voting.

For that reason I'd like NZ to pick one of the ones that isn't red, white and blue. My preference would be to go for one of the green ones, but even black and white would at least be a bit different. This is their opportunity to have something a bit unique.

Realistically, if the All Blacks B&W fern emblem (No 11) ends up in the final four, it is bound to win. The marketing for that one is already done, and it's already all over the place in NZ.

Very interesting, I know there's been talk for a long time, but I didn't expect them to go through with it (and I still wouldn't be surprised if they end up making minor, cosmetic changes).

That being said, my preference is for number 6. I've always liked the fern proposals and, to me, it makes sense to keep the color scheme of the current flag (I'd say this even if it wasn't the same color scheme as the United States, France, etc.). 5 and 8 are cool alternative schemes. 12 looks like a Hippie Saudi Arabia.

Agreed. The colors remain the same, albeit with modern influences.

While I do not believe #35 has a chance of winning, it is also similar, yet different.

I also like no 35 as it has a stylized union jack that has some maori influence.

I think 35 is the only one that should be considered.

I might just have to move to NZ. If this is the biggest thing they have to worry about, it must be a utopia.

If only. Most New Zealanders think the whole referendum is a waste of 26 million dollars of tax payers money. With that said, I've never been a big fan of our flag. But, it's just a flag. I haven't and never will get a patriotic boner waving around a piece of cloth. The old school brigade argues men fought and died under that flag, and we dishonour them by changing it. Somehow, I doubt anyone who died under that flag gave it a second thought as the life drained out of them.

I can understand why New Zealanders might want a new flag, but these options range from mediocre to terrible. And the fancy curves the designers seem to insist on incorporating would be very difficult to bring off in practice.

I'd suggest a standard horizontal tricolour (colours probably white, green, black, though blue or gold could also be included), and in the centre either a fern frond (smaller than the oversized ones in the current selection), or a red-in-white star to show connection to the old flag.
