Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

I would love for there to be so much Star Wars that people get tired of it.

On the condition...

That quality is maintained and the theme/tone of anything produced honors the spirit of the franchise.

I don't want to see a Schwarzenegger movie with light sabres, for example.

Disney needs to treat Star Wars with the same attention paid to Pixar and Marvel and make sure that all offerings (even the lesser quality ones) do not reduce the quality of the whole.

With everything I've seen out of Disney/Lucasfilm since this whole process has begun, I have no concerns whatsoever in my mind.

To be fair, neither do I. I'm just stating my criteria.

Disney might take marketing to an obnoxious level, but I don't think they'll mismanage the Star Wars franchise and start turning everything they touch into lightsabers, Jedi Knights and Darth Vader. They're masters of just releasing enough content to keep you wanting more if their past home video releases of classic animated movies are any indication of how they'll handle Star Wars as the years pass.

As a father of eight year old twins I agree. As a fan of Star Wars since I was six years old (in 1977) I also acknowledge that Lucas is as much a master of the force of marketing as Disney ever has been.

Oh, for sure. The rest of the marketing world could learn a thing or twenty from the skills of men like George Lucas and Walt Disney.

I just love that there's this wonderful feeling of anticipation in the air for new SW. Sure we had it in 1999 before TPM but we're also hoping that the powers that be learned a LOT from that and the whole PT debacle and this time, it'll be different.

Everything we've seen thus far would indicate this might be the case.

Or, as a poster here stated months ago........"Ewwwww - prequel cooties!!!"

;)

For all I know, Lucas was inspired by WD when he made that deal that gave him all the marketing (EDIT: I mean merchandising) rights for the first Star Wars movie.

Disney's recent marketing has been hit or miss, while the MCU has pretty successful. Tomorrowland, John Carter, The Lone Ranger and the last Pirates OF The Caribbean movie weren't to be it bluntly. Lucas' trailers were full of lgihtsaber scenes, space battles and shootouts. the Force Awakens really hasn't IMO shown us that, let alone a tag line. I am looking forwad to some new lightsaber action and some good soundbytes.

My apologies. I am referring specifically to all the merchandise and tie-in products. Lucas was the first to really take advantage of this in the modern sense apart from Walt Disney.

Anyone else my age or a little older also knows this from personal experience.

Best and smartest personal business decision of the past 50 years. The man was far ahead of his time in realizing that licensing and marketing were where the real movie money would be. That's a level of intuition and savvy you don't see that often in the entertainment industry.

Thanks for understanding what I meant. I need to mention that I didn't mean "marketing" but rather "merchandising". But you got that.

Speaking of trailers (above), does anybody have ANY clue if and when we will be getting an actual FULL trailer?

With the film now almost four months away, I was expecting a full 2:30 - 3:00 minute trailer by now.

Perhaps during D23, the big Disney celebration that's coming up? We're almost certainly going to get a full-length trailer by sometime this fall and in the immediate buildup to the December premiere.

it's nice when people on the internet can use deductive reasoning. It's so rare.

I'd forgotten D23 was next weekend. Maybe that's where we'll not only get news of a new trailer but also all the toy reveals that collectors have been waiting for?

The official launch date for action figures and other toys from The Force Awakens is midnight on September 4th and that's less than a month away. To date we've seen images of almost none of the toys and collectibles based on the new movie with the major exception of the 6" First Order Stormtrooper figure in exclusive San Diego Comic-Con packaging.

I think it'll be in september to coincide with the launch of their journey to the force awakens campaign or whatever it's called. And then a final trailer in november.

I think D23 we'll get a Rogue One teaser, and a Civil War trailer for the headliner. And other random stuff: casting, other anthologies, marvel movie news, marvel tv show stuff(Jessica Jones footage maybe?)
