TNG is about 30 awesome episodes

JesterFace

Fleet Captain
Commodore
For me that is.

Everytime I watch TNG on DVD, I watch about 30 great episodes of it. And that's it. I love those episodes and I don't want to imagine my life without them. However, that leaves a lot unwatched. But... I don't want to. I basically worship those (about) 30 episodes, the rest of the series... just aren't as good or they're spoiled with some childish plothole... Someday I might watch them, but right now... TNG, for me, is those awesome (about) 30 episodes.

I might also point out that those episodes make it my all time favourite series. And movies can't compete with that...

It's kinda like with 24, the TV show.
I love the first season... rest of the series... not at all.
(I watch it with the alternate ending where Teri doesn't die)

Call me weird or what you want but... that's how it goes around here.

TNG has a much higher satiety index than a paltry 30-some-odd episodes. Yes, there are poorly written episodes marbled within this series, but only the mediocre artist is always at his best. The good definitely outweighs the bad - and by a hell of a lot! It was a very successful show during its original run and if that success was relying on 30 good episodes for that, then ... that doesn't coincide. If you were to corner me, then I might be forced to admit that TNG is dated - alright? OK, it's dated and some aspects of the series are always going to reinforce that, but ... TNG's a lot more than that. A lot more. It's a classic, because of many great stories. Stories that were true yesterday, are true today and will still be true tomorrow.

There are definitely a lot more than 30 awesome episodes of TNG for me. Seasons 3-6 had some filler but it was almost all good. That's without taking into account the handful of awesome episodes from the first 2 seasons and the last season.

The only episodes I wouldn't watch again are Season 2's "The Outrageous Okona" and "Shades Of Gray". Possibly a few more in there but nothing else springs to mind right now.

30 awesome episodes out of 178? maybe. Many more that are perhaps less awesome, but still really good, entertaining & highly watchable, IMHO.

And there are even bad episodes that contain awesome moments within. Are there some I never choose to watch? Sure, but on average, I bet it's less than 5 per season

Nope.

THe majority of the shows are pretty dang great, I'd say. Omitting such turds as "Code of Honor," "Aquiel," "Sub Rosa," "Shades of Gray," and maybe one or two others, I find the series incredibly entertaining and rewatchable.

Please don't leave out "Masks"

And I'd say about 75-80% of the episodes are ones I can watch over and over with about 30% of those being truly great.

Not bad for a 7 year run.

24 was different from TNG. TNG varied greatly in the content of the shows. 24 was the same plot (Jack Bauer has 24 hours to stop some horrible event from happening). It made it through 2 seasons to me until it was just the SOS with a few new frills added each season.

Well that all depends what your definition of an "awesome" or "great" episode is.

30 "awesome" episodes could be taken as 30 "better than good" episodes.

I know that the amount I consider "good" episodes larger than the amount I consider "great, please give me more of this storyline you can't just end it after one episode!" episodes.
However there are (imho) also fewer "bad" or even "oh god that's awful how was this script ever accepted?!" episodes than good episodes.

Some episodes I don't watch because the particular storyline doesn't interest me, others I find badly written, but enjoy them anyway because I'm interested int he scenario.

That was the thing about TNG, it didn't have an overarching plot and very few two-parters it was a grab-bag of stories where you never knew what you were getting.

I think TNG fits with every other Trek series: a third of it is good, a third is mediocre and a third of it is bad.

I liked 24 at first but it wore out for me when it was obvious their only idea left was to kill some popular character in a contrived way for shock value.

I'm talking about episodes that are so good they make life worth living. :)

What are your thirty great episodes?

8. SINS OF THE FATHER
9. THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
10. LEGACY
11. REUNION
12. DATA'S DAY
13. CLUES
14. NIGHT TERRORS

And the 24 numbered are the best television entertainment ever, I'm not saying that rest of TNG is poop, no, there is good stuff there but these are so great it's unreal.

I have a number of episodes I can watch anytime, and enjoy them every time:

Data's Day
A Matter of Honor
Lower Decks
The Big Goodbye
Unnatural Selection
Peak Performance
We'll Always Have Paris
Disaster
The Defector
The Measure of A Man
Conundrum
The Royale
The Drumhead
Cause and Effect
Half A Life
All Good Things

The rest range from really good to meh.

That is what I was assuming ;) and for that definition 30 is a good number, I don't know if I could name that many.

While I don't agree with your whole list,t here are certainly some we are very much in agreement about.:)

I should try naming them actually. Well my personal definition is either "One of the best TV scifi episodes I have ever seen" or "give me more of this character/storyline"
In order of airing, I suppose?

-Measure of a Man
-Q Who (the Borg NEVER were as good again as here, imho)
-The Bonding
-The Hunted
-The Offspring
-Hollow Pursuits
-Best of Both Worlds
-Family
-Brothers
-Suddenly Human
-Remember Me
-Data's Day
-Half a Life
-The Host
-Ensign Ro
-Silicon Avatar
- I, Borg
-Face of the Enemy
-Thine Own Self

See I can only name 18 that fit the category for me...I still like many other episodes, both those I find "awesome" and wanted to see more of.

30? In no particular order...

"Where No One Has Gone Before"
"Heart of Glory"
"Skin of Evil"
"Conspiracy"
"The Neutral Zone"
"Q, Who"
"Contagion"
"Where Silence Has Lease"
"Time Squared"
"The Royale"
"A Matter of Honor"
"The Survivors"
"The Enemy"
"The Vengeance Factor"
"The Defector"
"The Offspring"
"The Most Toys"
"Sarek"
"The Best of Both Worlds I"
"Remember Me"
"Reunion"
"The Wounded"
"The Drumhead"
"Night Terrors"
"The Mind's Eye"
"Ensign Ro"
"Power Play"
"Parallels"
"All Good Things"

During my last revisit of TNG I found 15 of the 178 episodes to be excellent and 42 of them to be good. So that's 56 good-excellent episodes out of 178. That's about 31 percent.

QPid, for Worf's line if nothing else?

QPid, for Worf's line if nothing else?

This one?
"I am NOT a merry man!"

Or the awkward "sorry" after he smashes Geordi's banjo? :)

Please don't leave out "Masks"

That episode is perpetually rewatchable simply due to the fact of it being hilariously bad:lol:
No matter how good or bad the episode is, it's worth watching sometimes just because of Spiner, his different personas are great as he changes quickly from one to another. (But, only watch it in a dark room where no one can notice you watching it)
