Did anyone get a Windows 10 invite?

Cortana I turned off on the first day, functionality seemed very limited (couldn't find my house for example) and google now already provides that sort of assistant for me. Also turning her off was the only way to make local search work as I like (I don't want web searches).

I finally got an invite, but I prefer to let other people discover and deal with the bugs before I get into something I don't have the skills to get out of if it goes wrong.

And some of my games barely function now with 8.1, so why risk losing them entirely?

I didn't bother waiting for the invite. I just downloaded the Windows 10 media creation tool from Microsoft, made a USB stick with it and upgraded my system from there.

Only hitch with the whole thing was that Windows didn't have proper drivers for my sound card. Luckily Windows 8 drivers seem to work for now.

Cortana not available in my region? Funny, there was no mention of that in the media build up...

If you really want Cortana it is actually there. Just change region and language (both of them) to UK or USA and she will pop on the start screen..

I solved the very slow boot time, in a roundabout way. There's an option in power settings to enable fast boot..

But you shouldn't have to do this. I thought fast boot was part of the normal Windows 10 experience..

Reduced my boot time to 18 seconds

I've upgraded from Windows 8.1..backwards compatibility is much improved..I can now play my Starfleet Command II CE
edition as well as my modified Crimson Skies game from 2000
those particular games Windows 8.1 simply refused to play...but both ran well under Windows 7..

Now if I can get my original Starfleet Command to play..my
old gaming fun will be complete..

Jettison 8.1...go to 10 you won't regret it..

That's where I'm at too. I've never upgraded Windows before, so it's completely new to me. Waiting until any serious bugs are worked out of it.

It is part of the Windows 10 experience. It's set to "on" by default, so I'm not sure what happened for you.

Just got an email. "It looks like you've reached your device limit for installing apps and games from the Store on your Windows 10 device. If you want to install apps and games from the Store on another Windows 10 device, remove a device from the device list."

Unfortunately, I only have the one so that may be a teeny bit of an issue if I do remove it:lol:

There's a fix here:

Good luck.

Strange question for the thread. I have a friend of mine whose roommate used her computer without her permission. When she fired it up today, she had the Windows 10 background and her computer had been updated.

Is it possible the jackass who was on her computer was able to opt into the update without knowing it happened, or would that require somebody to be pretty oblivious?

No one's computer is going to update automatically. You have to explicitly tell the notification application to go ahead and upgrade. There are multiple prompts to go through before the upgrade officially begins, too.

So, roommate has to be completely oblivious, or an unthinking asshole.

Yeah, i'll wait a couple of months as well...
Windows 7 is still pretty good and stable for now...

It would ask if you wanted to upgrade and takes a while to complete, no way you wouldn't know you'd done it. It is possible to revert to your previous version pretty easily for a month.

OMG Tried the Solitaire collection and it stinks...
The game plays but it's not fluid or smooth but very jerky. Every now and then it just freezes then catches up as if it's an MMO and lag is an issue..
Terrible implementation of this game. The old Windows 8 version was superior in every way..

OH and why is the film and TV app playing films but with black screen? Hell I would not want to buy movies in that app if they don't actually show pictures..

This now feels like a huge live Beta...

Thought so, just wanted to confirm. Thanks!

So I turned on my computer today (upgraded to Win10 a few days ago) and my wallpaper was gone. Turns out that happened because "Windows is not activated" and there's a problem with my product key. WTF, Microsoft? Win10 was FREE. I had no product key. This happen to anyone else?

I DID happen to run Malwarebytes the last time I used the computer, if that might have been the problem.
