7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor Who

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

If they change it because they want a female Doctor for the sake of having a female Doctor I'm opposed. If they open up their casting calls and a woman gives the best audition, I'm all for it. I do tend to agree that the character has an intrinsic masculinity to him, but change can be good as long as it isn't change for the sake of change. Even then, sometimes it works out.

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

Has casting ever been open to a female? I'm pretty positive no woman was at an audition or even considered during the classic days. Has any actress expressed a legitimate interest since 2005? Has one ever auditioned?

I also think it could be pulled off. I think the dynamic would be similar to BF's Sixth Doctor and Evelyn Smythe, only in reverse.

No, according to Moffat even with Michelle Gomez she'd come to audition for another role (in my head I wonder if it was Ms Delphox from Time Heist but I can't back that up.) and he just had a light bulb moment because he'd been struggling with the casting of the Master.

Sounds right to me. When Time Heist aired, Michelle Rodriguez wasn't credited yet as Missy, so, I wondered from the trailers if she was Missy

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

There were rumours that Sheridan Smith had been approached to play a female Doctor, which would have been interesting as some fans already know her as Lucie Miller. I'm not sure if there was any substance, as I don't think she or anyone official commented, but I know people close to her said it was offered.

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

If people want a female time-lord, find a way to bring back Romana and be done with it.

She wouldn't be the focal point of the show, however. Changing the main character, as we've seen several times already, steers conversations about the show precisely because he's at the center.

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

I was trying to imagine some of the Matt Smith scenes played by a woman instead- they sort of work but I keep hearing Dory from 'Finding Nemo"...

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

Well that's just about the dumbest excuse that I've ever heard.

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

It be funny if the Doctor picked up the face of a former companion. Even if older. Throw himself for a loop as he knows this face. It belonged to....thingy.

Be even funnier if he either ran into the Doctor his face was a companion of, and have to try to pull off being that companion for a small while.

Or just a total reversal. Run into the someone who has the face of that former Doctor, and have that become the new Doctor's companion. The whole time the actor that had been the Doctor, having to play someone else that is not the Doctor, while the actor that had been his companion, now plays the Doctor.

Michelle Rodriguez is the American Latina actress who plays Vin Doesel's love interest in the Fast & Furious movies.

Oops, typo/Brain Fade, of course I meant Gomez :alienblush:

I've never seen the Fast and Furious movies, but, yea, I know who Michelle Rodriguez is from LOST and from the Zombie Movie

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

It just occurred to me that the new series has already had DoctorDonna, which I had totally forgotten. Sure, Catherine Tate was channeling David Tennant, but for a few minutes at least, she was pretty awesome. That's all the evidence I need that it would work. There's no reason why they couldn't do it if they got the right actress.

Michelle Gomez was credited as Missy from the start actually.

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

Well, we have seen multiple Doctors at once haven't we.

Maybe a new take on that is needed.

Imagine not one, but several meta-crisis type Doctors. Several regenerations at once

I can imagine Dr. Who being franchised out to different countries, with the Doctor being split into any different numbers, etc.

These would be different series, and local causes could be talked about in each.

In one the Doctor fights against Western evangelicals in Africa (who are speading hate to feed upon) etc.

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

^That might work if they can get a black man to play the Doctor, since having a white guy do that would be frowned upon.

I tried looking up Missy on IMDB for the previous episodes she appeared in when Time Heist aired, and didn't find her credited there. Though, yea, she was credited in the closing credits of the episodes she appeared in. Sorry, I should've been more clear, I didn't have the episodes at the time to check

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

I understand why some people might be a little reluctant to have a change like that since the Doctor as an English gentlemen has long been part of the character's mythos. However, I think that element has significantly faded with the new series and I think a female Doctor would fit into the show's format quite well.

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

^That said, why not an American Doctor, then? Somebody like Sam Spade, complete with trench coat and 1940's fedora?

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

The Brits get touchy when you mention making the Doctor American. As an American myself, I don't like the idea (except in an alternate universe where the show was American since the beginning which we discussed last year). It's a quintessentially British show and identity...you'd have to completely remake it.

An American actor playing the Doctor, on the other hand, I have no problem with. If they can do the accent, why not? But that would cause the British tabloids and many hardcore fans to have a stroke.

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

I'd be fine with an American actor, but they would have to play the character as British-- heck a Brit plays superman so fair's fair :)
