Young Kirk in ST09 and at least the first 75 percent of STID was egotistical and cocky. With no track record, I can see how that would make him unlikeable. Mature Kirk still had a large ego but wasn't egotistical, and exchanged his brash cockiness for confidence that came from experience. I think the kids would say he had swagger.
