Killjoys Season 1: Discussion and Spoilers

I hadn't been to bothered by the real world buildings and things as sets in the earlier episodes, but this one did bug me.

So Red 17 wasn't even a real thing then? I was a little confused on some of that.
I did like getting to learn more about what happened with Dav. I wonder if it's going to turn out that his squad did something wrong, and he had no other choice but to kill them? I doubt they're going they'll have him just murder them in cold blood, but I guess it's not totally impossible.

Maybe it was real, part of some past case that the ship had dealt with, but it was no longer relevant in the present. Whether it was real or not didn't matter; what mattered was that the computer believed it was important. It's interesting to realize that, even within the "real life" experienced by these characters, it behaved like a classic Hitchcockian McGuffin -- something that motivates the actions of a person (namely the computer) without having any objective importance.

Maybe they turned into space rage zombies...

Tonight's new episode:
One Blood
Top Killjoys from around the Quad are pitted against one another in a race to find Big Joe, a legendary bounty hunter gone rogue.

Right? When they started arming up the girls, I said to my wife, I guess we know which episode of Firefly this is spoofing.

I'm sure that Firefly episode was itself an homage to something from older Westerns. And if anything, I was reminded more of Mad Max: Fury Road, at least the bit about the pregnant woman using herself as a shield.

By coincidence I just watched an old 1951 movie "Westward the Women" which hit some of the same notes. After most of the men abandon a wagon train, the rugged trail guide has no choice but to arm a bunch of mail-order brides and train them how to shoot . . .

And, yes, one of them is pregnant.

A pretty good movie, actually.

I'm almost at the point where I'm gonna stop watching it.

Right now it's basically a dumbed down version of dark matter.

Every character has the emotional range and attention span of a 15 year old.

Contrasted to Dark matter where every character basically acts like adults.

The only reason I watch it is because it makes dark matter look better by comparison.

Kills joys is a firefly, guardian of the galaxy, and alias rip off.

None of the best quality are borrowed only the worst.

Fancy suddenly became a very interesting character this week. He's not just a jerk, he chooses to be the jerk because every organization needs one. That's a nice bit of characterization. And the direction was effective too -- he first appears off to the side by himself, facing away from everyone else, while making his dramatic entrance, and then at the end we see him return to his solitary seat away from everyone else, and we have a better understanding of why he's there and what it truly means. Really cool stuff.

I'm surprised Dutch and the others turned the gene bomb over to the Company rather than destroying it. But then, they aren't your usual highly moral heroes.

But I'm glad she's finally opened up to the brothers about Khlyen (I keep wanting to see that as Khylen) and how he's been coming after her. She's been off on her own about this all season, and it's gotten in the way of the trio really feeling like a team. Hopefully they'll be more united now.

Okay, one thing tonight's ep showed me is that Hannah is a really, really good actor. Damn! Her emotional confrontation with Khlyen in the ally was quite gripping.

And... what IS he?!

Vampire Khlyen... I was tired of him by the 2nd episode. The sooner he's staked and buried-or spaced (into a sun!), the better.

That was pretty crazy. I'm thinking since this is sci-fi that Khylen might be some kind of cyborg or something.
It was nice getting to see so much more of him and Fancy. Loved Fancy's bit about being an asshole because ever group needs one.
I was a little surprised John knew about Khylen, I figured she would have kept that whole part of her history a secret.
I'm think we might have some kind of a civil war or something breaking out soon. They seem to be putting a lot of emphasis on all of these groups and people working against The Company, and I have a feeling that going to build to something eventually.

The hints dropped in this episode make it seem the war is going to be between the RAC and the Company, and everybody else is cannon fodder...

If the RAC was truly neutral then why would they back down from a threat from the Company over a single weapon, unless they both know that war is coming between them but neither of them is ready.

And with that kind of weapon, it is not so much a civil war as a racial genocide, like in former Yugoslavia, Kongo and so on...

I could see that too. The RAC would just end up working with all of the anti-Company people and groups. I could see a arc for either part of this season or next with the RAC trying to gather all of The Company's enemies together to fight them.

I don't know about that. What's been built up here over the whole series isn't just one conglomerate versus another, it's a populist uprising against the one-percenters. Certainly it's not unprecedented for a powerful elite to co-opt a populist movement for its own ends, but I don't see the RAC having a dog in this fight. The building conflict is whether the Killjoys will remain neutral, let themselves be co-opted by the Company, or take a stand for the common people. Indeed, we may see Killjoy turning against Killjoy as they make different choices.

YAY Ian Tracey!!!

So pleased to see him :adore:

This show is way better than Dark Matter to me, since we're doing comparisons. The worlds are interesting, Dutch is very well played and very nice to look at, everything is quite colourful. I'm happy with this space ship show!

Caught up with KILLJOYS tonight. Another fun episode, although Dutch shook off being shot rather too easily . . ..

The seven-generation business sounds like seeds being planted, and may tie in with the bloodline-killing bomb.

Haven't had a chance to check out DARK MATTER yet, but I'm hooked on KILLJOYS so far.

Tonight's episode:
Kiss Kiss, Bye Bye
The quest to uncover the mystery behind D'avin's missing memories leads the Killjoys to an undercover black market and triggers a shocking incident that will haunt the team.

I found it strange that Lucy didn't have emergency medical procedures already programmed into her. Also, why did Dutch just tie D'avin up in the cargo hold? They're bounty hunters; shouldn't they have a brig or cell onboard for prisoners?

I'd read that Amanda Tapping would be a guest star this week, but I wasn't expecting her to be evil. It's also a bit surprising that we get the answer to D'avin's mystery so soon. And a bit of an easy out that he was just a programmed weapon.

I guess with only a 10-episode season, you have to move things along.

I had the brig question too.

A absolutely loved Lucy's helplessness - "John? I don't know what to do." Poor AI! :(

I didn't expect much from his series when it started, but now I think it's stellar (pun intended)! The cast are outstanding actors.
