2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (LOL NO)

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

I'd be wary of overpaying for Price, however, considering he's pitching out of his mind in his walk year. He's a very good pitcher, but I don't think he's elite, and I have a feeling Dave Dombrowski is going to be looking for an elite-level payday for Price.

I'd be wary of overpaying for anybody - but these days 'overpay' is the new 'pay' when you're talking about this tier of talent.

If you get a negotiating window, sure. problem is that most of these guys get one big chance to cash in, so if you are 2 months from being a free agent, you aren't going to want to sign early, gotta make your money and see what the market says you're "worth"

I agree to an extent, but if the Cubs are going to overpay for a pitcher, I'd rather it be Hamels, since he's locked up through 2019.

Oh, I'd never blame a player for getting everything they can and/or not offering a hometown discount.

Hamels is older and having a worse season but that contract situation is preferable, of course.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Hamels is having a worse season but his performance over the past five years is significantly better than Price's during that span, so I just feel he's more of a known commodity.

In other news, Barry Bonds is a free man. Federal prosecutors convict at an insane rate, which makes this entire case look even more stupid than it does on first glance.

The rental aspect for Price would stop me from giving a Schwarber-level prospect. I'd think more of an Alcantara. They'd probably want Baez. Forget that.

Baez has a worse allergy to walks than Castro and projects to strike out more than Sammy Sosa ever did. He has no pitch recognition ability, and all you have to do is spam him curveballs low and away; he'll swing at every single one of them. If anything, he's the Cubs' most expendable prospect.

He'd shown signs of improvement before the finger injury.

I'd put Junior Lake (if you count him as a prospect anymore), Alcantara, and Vogelbach above him on the 'expendability' matrix...particularly with Castro reeling.

It's pretty clear if Baez was not injured he'd be up and playing 2nd with Russell as short given Castro's struggles. Can you say the same for any of the three I mentioned?

Castro is signed through 2020, which none of those prospects can say. It's easily the worst deal made by the Epstein / Hoyer regime. He was a classic sell-high prospect in the Corey Patterson / Felix Pie mold, but the ship has sailed on that front.

Vogelbach is absolutely a career DH; the guy can hit and he can get on base but holy holy holy shit he's fat.

What's the money matter? They just DFA'd a guy making more AAV. Castro signed an 8yr 60MM deal. That 2020 year is a team option.

Jackson is only signed through next year. The Cubs are not going to bench a guy with guaranteed pay for the next three -- potentially four -- seasons.

Sure, not permanently. But they're on the cusp, I bet, of putting Herrera at 2nd and Russell at short a couple times a week. Don't you think they'd rather that was Baez?

And that's a team option - it'd never be four if he doesn't improve.

This is kind of an impressive 180 turn from when you said he was one of the Cubs' best players.

He's had a few months of subpar play in between. Unfortunately my crystal ball is under repair.

(I also didn't say DFA him - just a few days off a week)

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

It's time for the Red Sox to give up on their obsession with veteran players and let the kids play out these last two months, get them ready for next year.

If I'm recalling correctly, you said trading him was a bad idea, and that was like two or three months ago.

It was. If Baez had done better in his debut stint they'd have probably done it. He didn't so they didn't.

Hilarious that the Reds challenged a cubs triple into a home run.
