Anyone worried about the upcoming Deep Freeze??

Anyone worried about the upcoming Deep Freeze??

No.

Sheesh, the global warming denial industry is cranked—and I do mean cranked—into overdrive. The latest is a rehash of an old claim that we may be headed for a “mini–ice age” due to changes in the Sun’s magnetic activity affecting its output.

Let me be very clear: no. I’ll repeat: NO. The overwhelming majority of scientists do not think this can happen. While changes in the Sun’s activity have a very marginal effect on global warming and/or cooling, human contributions to carbon dioxide in our atmosphere completely overwhelm the Sun’s influence. It’s like tapping on your brakes as your car plunges headlong into a brick wall at 100 kilometers per hour.

This new claim comes from a presentation at conference by Valentina Zharkova, a mathematician and scientist at Northumbria University. To be clear, she’s not predicting a 60 percent drop in the light and heat emitted by the Sun, but a drop in magnetic activity in the Sun. This has only a marginal effect on the Sun’s light/heat output. Also, if you listen to an interview with her on Radio New Zealand, you’ll hear some unusual claims, like the climates on other planets are changing due to the Sun—a red herring when it comes to climate change on Earth. She also admits at the end she doesn’t do atmospheric research, so the claim that lowered magnetic activity of the Sun can cause an ice age here on Earth is in my opinion shaky at best.

Doesn't bother me, but then again I never used to mind working in a cold store somewhere the wrong side of-18C - think I was Breen in a former life.

IF for some reason I lost my ability to reason and believed her, then I would welcome the respite from the summer heat.

I live in Florida. I welcome any down turn in temperature. Sadly, this will not happen.

I feel the same living in California. What annoys me is the 15 year wait. I don't want to wait til I'm 60 to cool off, bring it on now!

WINTER MIGHT BE SLIGHTLY COLDER THAN NORMAL?!?!?!

I survived the Polar Vortex. I can survive this.

Thank you! There was a thread on this the other day. I suspect we'll keep seeing this pop up for the next 15 years.

I'll just break out the thermal underpants. Don't want the boys to get chilled.

Completely unrelated to the theory OP posted, but is anyone else familiar with the other "upcoming ice age" theory? In a nutshell, this one says that due to global warming, the ice caps are starting to melt, which affects the salinity of the water, which causes the Gulf Stream to shut down, cooling Europe, and effectively sending us into a new ice age. The last estimate I saw for that happening was ~300 years or so. Anyone have any more recent updates or rebuttals to that one?

I think at worse, Europe would be slightly colder. That causing an Ice Age seems to come from Whitley Strieber who wrote The Coming Global Superstorm which was adapted into The Day After Tomorrow. Whitley was inspired by his alien abductions.

I think we'll be fine, I wouldn't trust a single word from those aliens.
