Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Here's a short video I just made so you can see it all in motion:

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Were there specific posts you were trying to point us towards? I probably have the board set to show a different number of posts-per-page than you, because nothing on page 12 seemed particularly relevant, and for me the thread only went to page 42.
Yeah, I think it must be different settings, so here are some specific posts - you can back-navigate from there.
Here is where the cargo deck recreation starts to show that the official 1,000' length is a little dicey: http://www.trekbbs.com/showpost.php?p=4239860&postcount=175
And here is a direct comparison: http://www.trekbbs.com/showpost.php?p=8887450&postcount=806
Lastly, how the Engineering complex fits into it all, extended corridor and all! http://www.trekbbs.com/showpost.php?p=8986909&postcount=905
Obviously there's a lot more information in the thread!

Having said all that...
Yeah, remember: it's not a priority of mine to make sure "it all fits". My aim is to make accurate on-screen representations of the sets featured in the TV show / films. It also saves me a lot of headache not worrying about the physicality of it all ;)
...I have no wish to derail Donny's thread any further! ;-)

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

@Donny - Love that short video. Wow!
@cardinal biggles - Yeah, the side reactor room can fit without issues. Everything else, well that's another thread :)

Anyway, like Mytran said, I have no wish to derail Donny's thread ;)

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Wow. How did you do the intermix chamber lighting?

It's a relatively simple shader setup, actually. I used the exact same method (and textures) from the Voyager: Elite Force game from the early 2000s. It takes 4 instances of a basic "energy pattern" texture and stretches these instances different amounts, set them to move different directions and different speeds, and overlays them together to create a seemingly random swirl effect. I then multiply the whole thing by a value of 8 or so. The engine renders values higher than 1 as a bloom effect, giving the illusion the material is giving off light.

If that makes any sense.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Well, I've started on the Officer's Lounge. You may remember, two years ago (has it really been that long?!?) I created the officer's lounge with the previous iteration of the Unreal Engine, UDK. Click here to visit my blog post on that build.

Basically, I want to honor Andrew Probert's concept art for the area, while staying true to what we see onscreen in TMP. The theory that will support this is that the "windows" in the set we see in TMP are not windows, but viewscreens. The bulkheads which contain these viewscreens can retract into the floor, giving access to the rest of the officer's lounge, which sports the magnificent view of the nacelles and the space beyond.

I've started on just what we see in TMP first, and then will create the rest. I'll also "TWOK-ify" the set as I go along, adding details that make it feel more at home in the second movie.

Here's what I've managed to flesh out in the last two days:

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Do the entire bulkheads need to retract? They do look extremely solid and immobile. Maybe just the viewscreen sections could slide out of sight (like a 21st century slide projection screen), leaving the bulkheads in place with big square openings in them to admire the rest of the lounge through

Thing is, due to the shape of the outer hull structure, there isn't enough headroom on either side of this lounge to provide a door to the VIP lounge (the one with the windows overlooking the nacelles). This is where Shane Johnson's plans were in error.

I know I said it's not my objective to "make it all fit" with this project, but since not adhering to the outer hull structure of this area would result in total unbelievability, I'm having to make an exception here.

The other option, if the bulkheads do not retract, is to eliminate the viewscreen bulkheads altogether, much like I did in my UDK build. I'm hoping, however, to come up with a compromise to keep the on-screen integrity of the privacy lounge as seen in TMP.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Ah, fair enough, I hadn't considering the headroom either side!

I did see one version of the lounge where it had been rotated 180 degrees (so that the screen faced forward). It would mean that you could access the aft lounge just by walking towards the camera, but it still would make those doorways impassable!

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

This may be a stupid question, but didn't the Director's Cut on the Motion Picture establish that the lounge Kirk, McCoy & Spock were in was located on the trailing edge of the saucer section- the upper level of the Recreation Deck specifically. IIRC they produced the view out the 'window' by placing a virtual camera in that location on the CGI starship and created the view of the nacelle...

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Weird. On the DVD version, which I am assuming has the remastered footage, it does indeed appear as if the lounge is in an area near the rec deck. In the HD/BluRay version, there is nothing there but stars, which is what I think the original version was like, pre-remastering. This would more likely put the lounge up in the B/C deck area where it was always intended to be (at least, as I understood it).

I'm curious if they've ever done a remastered BluRay of this? I got the latest version of the BluRay movies about a year ago and they look like their original theatrical releases, with the hope that they contained the updated VFX. No remastered footage at all, including those horribly distorted matte paintings when they step out into V'Ger towards the end. Was the new footage never rendered with HD in mind? Seems awfully short-sighted, if true.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

IIRC, Paramount cheaped out and only had the new VFX rendered at SD standards, so it was good enough for the original DVD and VHS releases. They'd have to re-render the VFX for there to be any kind of high-def release of the TMP-DE.

The warp engine outside the window was an attempt to reconcile the squareish window (which could only be on the Rec Deck) while also tipping their hat to an Andy Probert storyboard showing Kirk, Spock & McCoy in the VIP lounge with a view of the warp engines behind them.

Very short-sighted. All the remastered footage was rendered in 480p (or something similar), because it was done pre-HD days. So, to release the Director's Edition, the entire movie (and new effects) would have to be re-rendered in 1080p. Which would obviously take time and money that CBS is unwilling to spend.

It sucks. I'm so accustomed now to the Director's Edition that the theatrical version is almost unwatchable.
