Actually ideally people should work about 3 hours per day.
However infrastructure costs such as having large offices, and time wasted in transit it kinda makes sense to work for more.
However productivity takes a nose dive after one works for more than 3 hours. (granted people usually suck in their first few hours of their work day because they don't get enough sleep/rest)
Regardless the standard work week is absolute bullshit.
However it really is the fault of people, companies would love to work people less, however there are a bunch of government incentives to give "full time hours".
Also people always want to work more, inflating the cost of living, forcing the rest of the population to work even more. The irony of liberals is that they cannot accept that we live in a closed system. Personal freedom has a huge effect on those around you, and the rich are the smallest portion of this actual number.
Anyways wage labor is fast becoming a thing of the past.
I"d expect seasonal work to become much more common, as people move to live closer to work during the on season and maintain serperate slow season homes.
