Eye color may be linked to alcohol dependence

People with blue eyes might have a greater chance of becoming alcoholics, according to a unique new study by genetic researchers at the University of Vermont.

The authors found that primarily European Americans with light-colored eyes -- including green, grey and brown in the center -- had a higher incidence of alcohol dependency than those with dark brown eyes, with the strongest tendency among blue-eyed individuals. The study outlines the genetic components that determine eye color and shows that they line up along the same chromosome as the genes related to excessive alcohol use.

Well, all my fellow blue eyed Trek fans, we now have an excuse! It's not our fault!

I always thought that if you drink too much you get bloodshot eyes. That's what happens to me. Hmmmmm

Seems like absolute bunk, northern climates make you prone to drinking, people with northern ancestry like to drink, its oh so not rocket science.

Nothing like snow and fog to make you want to get blind drunk.

It's bloody hard for a culture to develop an anti drinking mentality when you have piss poor weather. In contrast drinking when it's warm is really unhealthy.

Wait what's a European American, do they hold dual citizenship? Why do American's seem to have to make a distiction i.e African American, surely they are just American? ;) (and yes I know you mean ancestry) But back on topic

But does this hold true of blue-eyed individuals in Europe? With blue eyes being dominant in the Northen European countries, or is some of it simply down to culture?

A corelation is not the same as a cause, I think more study needs to be done between those with light coloured eyes who drink heavily and those who don't drink heavily

I don't know, pretty much any location and life in general will give you plenty of excuses to drink.

But I have blue eyes, so maybe I'm not a good case study.

My roommate has blue eyes and drinks a lot.

I have brown eyes and don't drink as much.

SCIENCE!

I seriously doubt if being blue eyed is a link to alcoholism for the simple fact that blue eyes are commonly thought of as being mutation away from the normal brown eyes.

New research shows that people with blue eyes have a single, common ancestor. A team at the University of Copenhagen have tracked down a genetic mutation which took place 6-10,000 years ago and is the cause of the eye colour of all blue-eyed humans alive on the planet today.

I don't think that there was alcohol around ten thousand years ago.

What this is called is a Stereotype and nothing more.

Just because a study shows a tendency does not mean it's a law. It's just a study that curiously found the gene for blue eyes lines up with a few genes that are linked to alcoholism. This does not mean that blue eyes cause alcoholism, it means the genes that give a person blue eyes are located close to some that have been linked to alcoholism. That's all.

Honestly, I didn't expect this to be a serious discussion. And yes, I have read the article about where blue eyes came from. I'm quite a fan of the sciencedaily.com website. :)

Oh yes, there was

Maybe not breweries and wineries we know about, either in modern times or what they had in the ancient times, but Humanity would have likely utilized the fermenting fruit one way or other back then. Some animals do it, so..

Don't you find it highly suspicious that alcohol became popular only after that blue eye mutation?

Or that all that drinking led to the mutation. ;)

Anyway it's time for my fellow mutants (blue-eyed) to rise up and take over. ;)
