Looks like DS9 will not get Blu Ray

The poll results, where readers voted DS9 as the favorite series, are in issue 124 if anyone has that issue of the UK ST magazine.

Exactly. The idea that DS9 is more popular than TNG among Star Trek fans — collectively — is an extraordinary claim, to put it mildly. There's no evidence for it, and the ratings would in fact be evidence against such a claim.

The readers of the UK Star Trek magazine voted it the best series around 2005/2006. Just an indicator.

A decade ago?

Another survey in the same magazine a couple of years earlier named Voyager the most popular series IIRC.

IMDB gives more objective numbers:
1. TNG: 8,7/10 (53000 votes)
2. TOS: 8,4/10 (40000 votes)
3. DS9: 7,9/10 (29000 votes)
4. VOY: 7,7/10 (33500 votes)
5. ENT: 7,5/10 (26000 votes)

I think this is a fantastic show. Does anyone have this in avatar size, I'd love to use it.

If the poor sales figures for TNG blu-ray are correct, then that means the general public wasn't interested in it. Based on poor sales figures the general public doesn't care about TNG, but DS9 is the more popular series among Star Trek fans. So it is possible DS9 would actually sell better than TNG. I personally don't think it would be enough to convince the suits to remaster DS9, unless remastering can be done cheaper.

Now if my supposition that DS9 will sell as well as TNG is correct, then the question becomes how much can be spent on a remastering project and still be profitable?

I'm currently watching Farscape on blu-ray, and even though it didn't get a proper HD remaster it is a slight improvement over the DVDs in terms of picture quality. Of course it had the advantage of existing in the higher resolution PAL format but even so there could be a slight improvement if DS9 was given the same treatment.

The main reason I double-dipped on the Farscape Blu-rays was because of the special features. If loads of new specials features were added to a non-HD remastered DS9 blu-ray I would buy it.

While it has its niche, I don't believe DS9 is/was or will ever be more popular among fans than TNG was.

A poll done here can't be scientific but it does show where forum user's heads are. I may be wrong about Star Trek fans liking DS9 more than TNG, but it will depend on how you define a Star Trek Fan. When I said that DS9 was more popular among fans I meant fans that were likely to buy merchandise. A TNG fan or a DS9 fan who has only watched the one series on TV and has never watched any other Star Trek and has never bought any related merchandise or gone to a forum to discuss the show or even been on the internet to look up information for the show wouldn't qualify as a Star Trek fan for the purposes of my post.

The only way to prove that DS9 would sell at comparable numbers would be to give DS9 a remaster equal to what TNG received and it looks like that will not happen.

I believe the reason most of us here think that there will be no DS9 remaster is because the TNG remastering project was a failure. (Someone should do a postmortem thread on the failure of the TNG remastering project-If they believed it was a failure, and the lack of a DS9 remastering would indicate that it was). So, as I said in my original post, blu-ray could still be done, in a similar fashion to what was done for Farscape. It then becomes a question of how much can be done on a budget that would allow a profit. I stated I would double-dip based on special features but special features cost money as well so that too is part of budget considerations.

DS9 has certainly picked up traction in the years since it was off the air. It frequently pops up under "most watched" and "highest-rated" lists on Netflix and more and more often I'm seeing people jump back in and give it a shot after giving up on it ages ago, because there's just no damn space opera on TV anymore and they're desperate. The same has happened with ENT.

Just a quick look at my Netflix account: Deep Space Nine has been rated 1.09 million times, The Next Generation 3.04 million times, Star Trek 2.2 million times, Voyager 1.5 million times and Enterprise 1.08 million times.

And they all average 3.9 to 4 stars.

What's really depressing is that Netflix is still showing the low-rez SD versions of Next Gen. Looks awful. It's one of their most popular old TV shows, and yet Netflix can't be bothered to pay the higher charge for the HD versions.

Amazon Prime has TNG in HD and it looks great. But they are the only ones in the US as far as I can tell....

Netflix just haven't renewed their content deals yet, that's all.

When they do, unless Amazon have paid extra for exclusivity, then they likely will get TNG HD.

Why do the DS9-Fans not show the potential of a crowd funding? Set up a project inquiring who would participate in such a funding and how much he would give. Even though that might not be the real funding numbers in the end, it could CBS give the interest in such a funding (if numbers are sufficiently high) . I do not know if CBS would consider crowd funding compatible with their general policies.

If you can, get Amazon Prime, they have the Next Gen remasters on there. I'm spoiled by them now, will never go back to the original version of the series :P

^That reminds me...I need to cancel my Netflix subscription. Ever since I joined Amazon, I haven't gone back to Netflix. The amount of stuff in HD (at least at the time I switched) was just huge on Amazon compared to Netflix. Plus, I get free 2-day shipping on almost anything I want. Can't beat it!

We keep both Amazon Prime and Netflix. Can't really beat the combo for $170 a year.

iTunes US doesn't have the HD versions? iTunes Canada has them.

Also, it's amazing how people keep saying that people who "worked" on the project have said the sets did terrible, when, I've tried finding quotes from these people, and the only quote I've been able to find has been from 1 producer, who was only on contract to CBS to produce the special features. He was not an internal producer at CBS, but an outside contractor, so how does he know whether the information he has been given in regards to sales, is accurate, and not just something the execs at CBS have told their people to tell him, because the CBS execs were not happy with something he did on the special features and they do not plan to bring him back for future projects, but instead of telling him that, they are just saying "Oh...the sets didn't sell well."

On the other hand, the evidence that is available suggests differently from this producer's claim, and that there is interest and potential profit for CBS in converting DS9 to HD. On June 5, one thing I didn't mention, but noticed was that, here in Canada, in comparison, the only entry for Babylon 5 was Crusade was at #90 on the list; otherwise B5 was nowhere in the Top 100 for Science Fiction shows in Canada.

That won't work, and CBS doesn't work that way (nor is it, as somebody else has said, a charity.)

To add to that, how many people here, who love TNG actually purchased the sets at full price?

Full MSRP or average retail price? People are suckers if they paid $129.95 for the sets. I averaged about $60/season (IIRC) buying the first five seasons on day one.

I remember that whole thing, and that was insane. When the TNG DVDs first came out, they were $129. Nuts!

I mean, seriously: "Here's the wildly popular show Cheers for $39.95 a season!", or "Here's the wildly popular MASH for $39.95 a season!". Then, of course, "Here's the popular show Star Trek: The Next Generation for a mere $129.95 a season!"

REASONABLE!
