If I'm understanding this right, they want to be able to bounce back and forth between Phase II (post-refit) and New Voyages (pre-refit) episodes. So they're building a scaled-down Plug-and-Play version of the prototype vertical intermix shaft seen in the 1977 designs, one that they can stick in the middle of the Classic Engineering set for Phase II and then remove for New Voyages as needed. (That shaft was glimpsed in the 'To Boldly Go' vignette, after all.)

Correction: The 'Going Boldly' vignette was where the Phase II Enterprise debuted.

The Phase 2 Engineering set would look out of place unless everything else was also revised to Phase 2 designs- the Bridge for example.

I am OK with having the classic Engineering set with the Phase 2 exterior changes- I don't think all the changes would have happened at the same time. Upgrade the Nacelles, improve the deflector/sensor dish, all these things could happen without the complete Refit as the new show was intended to portray the ship IMO...

Both comments make sense to me. I'm also totally okay with the original Engineering room. Just curious about the thought process because, knowing how much thought they have historically put into such things, I'm sure it was discussed ... at length.

For simplicity sake I think many fans such as myself would prefer that you continued the timeline you've started. Otherwise we'd have three separate possible timelines for TOS season 4 (New Voyages/Phase II original, New New Voyages, Continues). It's getting terribly confusing.

I believe that the latest thinking is that we will do some episodes concurrently with TOS-era episodes (so we may do, say an episode that takes place immediately after "The Man Trap"). We will also be doing episodes shortly after the last episode of TOS ("Turnabout Intruder"). Lastly, we'll be doing episodes after the ship has its "Phase II" refit (but before it gets refit again shortly before TMP. So I think it's actually three eras that we'll be jumping to and from.

The title we will use for an episode ("New Voyages" versus "Phase II") seems to be related to when we decide to set the episode.

And yes, nothing that we might do that takes place in the later time frame is relying on our earlier episodes. We could well do an episode, for example, where we go off to the Klingon home world--with no recognition of our episode "Kitumba."

Some say our show has had some much change that it's practically a new show. Others just call it a reboot.

Presumably our latest-occurring episode will be immediately before TMP. Well, not immediately before; the Enterprise comes into dry dock 18 months before TMP. So presumably there would be no episodes during that 18 month period--but I guess stranger things have happened.

Since we are jumping around in time, I suppose that even after we do this "last" episode, we could still do episodes that take place earlier.

Aside from the periodic name change, what are your thoughts on doing different episodes of different TOS-related eras?

^ Depends. Are we going to need a chart to keep track of what happens when? (Continues, at least, is easy to keep up with - literally picks up right where 'Turnabout Intruder' left off and seems happy to consecutively fill whatever time exists between that episode and The Animated Series.)

Well, the ones where the ship has Phase II-style nacelles are Phase II episodes. Beyond that, we might put some little disclaimer before the episode (as they often do with Trek novels: "This episode takes place immediately following the events of TOS episode 'XXX'").

But we haven't really envisioned that our output will be so prolific that it will be hard for our viewers to keep up with what the heck is going on. What with Lost and other series, the idea of "flash forward" episodes seems to be something that viewers are able to navigate easily.

I just don't see any need for timeline hopping whatsoever unless you're going to be heavily referencing or precluding to original TOS episodes in someway. The community would generally frown upon this.

I think we'll find that "Torment of Destiny" takes place chronologically before even "Come What May"--and our follow-up episode shooting in September should probably be placed immediately after "The Man Trap."

My only confusion with NV/P2 is that I'm never quite sure how to refer to the series as a whole. Is Star Trek: New Voyages/Phase II OK, instead of picking one or the other?
