I LOVE TVH. But... man are some of the effects bad O_O. Mainly the tube like thing that wanted the whales. It looks like a giant paper towel tube :guffaw:. I can still watch the film for what it's worth though :). The humor and satire more than make up for it imo.

I think the whales' starship is great. It looks huge and alien, like nothing else I've seen on screen.

I went with TSFS because so many of the details of the film - hairstyles (Uhura's in the first bridge scene is a prime example), graphics on the bridge consoles, and cinematography all scream the early 1980's. TUC succumbs to the same to a lesser degree, feeling like an early 90's political thriller more than a Star Trek film.

Speaking of hair, I think I much prefer her in a uniform with her hair down.

A lot of her early hairstyles were just not Kosher.

Her early hairstyles were Kosher for the times in which the episodes were filmed. Of course, they look silly by modern standards, but no one batted an eye at them in the 60's.

One thing that I find tends to age the 80's movies is the use of contemporary computer graphics for the displays, which now look laughably terrible. TMP managed to avoid this with the use of the random film loops, which even though old technology for the time oddly enough helped futureproof it it better.

I agree with this somewhat. I think the bridge displays in TMP actually look worse than the others because they used rear projection for the screens and they look washed and faded. Starting in TWOK they used actual screens that give a much more vibrant look.

I LOVE the Enterprise bridge from the first 3 films, especially TWOK and TSFS.

The problem I have though is there were just too many damn things that clearly had no purpose what so ever and were just put there because they had nice lights.

A couple of screens that stand out to me are there's one visible behind Uhura that draws out a square and then divides it into 12 sections or so, and it just does that over and over again. I guess you could say it's a radar type screen....only why would it be in the communications and it didn't even look as good as radar in the 1980's.

Another is a screen that has a square cross it and leave shadows of it behind until it hits the other side of the screen...and then just does it again.

As for other things, there are just too many damn things that are clearly serve so purpose. Like the amber honeycomb of lights behind Spock's post. It's just several screen of honeycomb shaped lights with the same 5 or so blinking brighter one at a time....what the hell is that? I think it suddenly becomes blue in TSFS.

At Savvik's post there's this rainbow strip of lights that just lights up in random order.

My favorite though is the hundreds of buttons in three consoles at Savvik's station. NONE OF THEM ARE LABELED AND THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME!!!!! Kirk presses 3 of them in the prefix code combination.....but really? how the hell would anyone memorize what the hell all those buttons are for.

It's bothersome when you see displays like the phaser charging, shields screen, damage control, phaser lock that actually looked good and served a practical purpose.

Again I love the overall look of the bridge but considering the scale of the film I think they could have actually done more to make it look like everything had a purpose. I think TUC did a much better job with the displays and controls in this aspect.

I realize this isn't unique to Star Trek and other sci-fi, including Star Wars, have random lights and switches. But the Enterprise bridge is so central a setting it stands out more.

They even parody this in Airplane 2 when someone says to Shatner in the control room that the lights are blinking out of sequence and Shatner says "I see...get them to blink in sequence."

Also a guy says this device with a long tube with three long red neon tubes in it seems to have no purpose at all other than the lights just blinking on and off and Shatner say it has to have some purpose they wouldn't spend money on something that just blinks.

The ultimate joke being it's a same prop they used in TWOK at Regula I and in an episode of TNG.....I think they rented them from some company who made these kinds of things IIRC because it was cheaper than building their own.

A lot of your questions about the bridge consoles can be answered by looking at the manual Lee Cole, Rick Sternbach, and others on the design team for Star Trek: Phase II put together for the actors: http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/efm.php Almost every panel has a purpose.

Thanks a million. I'll check it out.

You are right about TUC getting the displays better on the bridge, that does help that film, but even these are starting to look very dated also. Human interfaces are probably going to end up more like the Iron Man or Matrix movies than what we see in Star Trek in my view.

^^^I think human interface are going to be a lot simpler than the overdone ones in Iron Man.

Just read it. That's good stuff. Makes me look at the bridge from I-III in a different light. Thanks again.

Maybe, I was referring to the 3D technology more than anything, look how far things have come in the last decade with swiping and gestures on touch screens, it's only a matter of time before it goes 3D.
