Star Trek Continues, Episode 4 - "The White Iris"

I smell Ellison behind the take down. Can't touch City. (Just conjecture, of course)

Then efforts to take down our "Mind-Sifter" production with Kirk's use of the "Guardian of Forever" to locate the comforts of Edith Keeler would have been made months ago.

I did forget to mention that, like others, I found the final revelation of who the girl was to be extremely touching. Really beautiful, I just wish the rest of the episode, and Kirk's pain, resonated with me as strongly as that scene.

I'm inclined to agree. I enjoyed the episode, but having Kirk cycle through four(?) women like that against a ticking clock didn't quite work for me. Plus, the way they let him off the hook so easily (Edith Keeler in particular; she accepted Kirk's reasoning a bit too readily).

I wonder if it might have been better he had instead spent more quality time with Miramanee, perhaps only showing the others in passing, and then introducing the young girl.
Though I can see how it would have been very difficult to manage. They needed a multitude of spirits to keep an air of mystery around the girl, and as build-up for that climactic meeting.

Again, an excellent production, but I wonder if perhaps it tried to do too much in one go.

Now given that a good chunk of Episode 5 has apparently already been filmed we might not have that long to wait to see what's next.

Actually all of the filming for episode 5 was completed in February.

For me that was the weakest part of the episode. The little girl scene registered strongly AND I TOTALLY DIDN'T CRY with me, but the others just didn't really click as readily. The first 3/4 of the episode, though? Solid, IMO.

But is that enough?

Captains girlfriend...

Not the best reason to be honest.. she doesn't add to it at all.

Ah well, will have to lump it from now on...

As McKennah said in the episode, "let it go."

It's getting to be rather tiresome seeing these complaints about McKennah in the Continues threads.

Someone else said above that Specht is a talented actress and a delight to interact with. Oh yes she's also a beautiful woman, something which as I'm sure you're all aware is rather relevant when it comes to performing on screen.

Any of these reasons alone would be "enough" to keep her around, never mind the fact that really, this is Vic's playground so of course he's going to include his fiancee. The same way other fan films have featured family members and friends in primary roles. Jimm and JOshua Johnson on Exeter, Patrick Cawley as Xon on Phase II, Mike and Holly Bednar on Starship Farragut, Nick and Lucie Cook on Intrepid... need I go on?

In short - Only a bunch of Star Trek nerds would find a reason to complain about this and it's lame. Kindly stop. I don't give two Orion shits that she's Vic's fiancee. She's as much a part of this crew as Doohan or Imahara or any of the others. Let it go.

I agree; after four episodes, Counselor McKennah is as valid a part of this interpretation of Trek as anyone. Michelle Specht does a good job in the role and I'm perfectly happy to see her on screen.

Sure, having a counselor and holodeck does give STC something of a TNG vibe in my eyes, but it's their show and I've been enjoying it.

I've grown to like her, at first the idea of a counselor on the TOS-E didn't quite fit for me, but I think having a female character who's not just sitting on the bridge and pushing buttons is a plus.

I must say that McKennah has never really given me cause to really complain. I can see why they would want another female presence amongst the cast particularly since they don't seem to be giving Uhura any serious screen time, which is something I'd like to see.

For me it all comes down to how she's utilized. If she's taking away from the Kirk/Spock/McCoy relationship/interaction then I'll complain, but if not then no real problem.

Regarding Uhura: if they ever get around to giving her some focus then I wouldn't mind seeing her with other abilities similar to what was done with her in some of the books. I liked the fleshing out she was given in James Blish's Spock Must Die as well as Uhura' Song. Make her more than a glorified switchboard operator. Some of the talents given to Hoshi Sato in ENT might be nice.

Kudos to set decorator Jay Pennington for retrofitting the Sick Bay set to make it look like the Farragut's from seven (eleven?) years earlier.

Yeah, how could they screw up the time frame like that? In "Obsession" the incident with the Farragut was "eleven years ago" but in this episode, which takes place later in the series, they say it's "seven years ago." I noticed that right away so I have to wonder how nobody in the Star Trek Continues camp caught that.

One of the funny little bits we did with Uhura (Kim Stinger) in "Kitumba" was a line of dialog as she was beaming down to the Klingon homeworld with the Enterprise landing party. Security Chief Chekov mentions that modern weapons are banned from the Klingon homeworld, to which Uhura (always the linguistics expert in a variety of languages) mentions "...but we can carry a knife, a sword, a bat'leth, a mevak, a tajtik, a kut'luch, a gt'set, a ni'itzu...."

We've always though that Uhura should do more than just push buttons and say "Hailing frequencies open, Sir."
