Meanwhile, crime has shot up in Baltimore as police are making fewer arrests

Yes, detaining, searching, and arresting people in droves for BS reasons like loitering, jaywalking, failing to obey police commands, public intoxication, fleeing the direction of police unprovoked (which got Freddie Gray tackled and killed), etc. is one way to temporarily prevent worse crimes, because when you sweep everyone up in your net you'll catch and inconvenience some genuine bad guys along with the tons of innocents who now have a record, jail time, fines, and are at risk of police brutality, none of which contribute positively to their earnings or job prospects, future interactions with police, or ability to take care of their kids.

Rounding up as many people as possible for petty nuisance charges in the hopes of preventing a few bigger crimes in the process is a perversion of justice and due process and the worst kind of lazy, exploitative, moneygrubbing, bigoted policing. I thought conservatives were in favor of individual liberty?

If that's how you think policing should be done, why don't we just arrest and detain all potential troublemakers before they commit any crimes? Teenage males are traditionally problematic. We should just detain them all for loitering, illegally search them, and find an excuse to arrest them so we can prevent them from potentially causing mischief. Hell, males in general are responsible for most crime, so let's just arrest the lot of them. I guarantee that violent crime will decrease dramatically. Because that's all that matters, right, the statistics; not the how and why?

Did anyone really think the problems in Baltimore (and elsewhere) were going to be solved overnight? Yeah, it's going to take some adjustment, but eventually (hopefully) police will adapt to the new normal instead of falling back on their old ways, and stick to doing genuine police work and community outreach instead of being revenue collectors and treating minorities and poor people like cattle to be herded or enemies to be monitored, controlled, or oppressed.

Police are petulant children. "You won't let me abuse black people for my own amusement? Fine! I'm just not going to do my job! Hmp!" Go the fuck home, then, and make room for people who take the job seriously.

If you don't like the facts being presented take it up with the journalist who wrote the article.

So, you don't have any opinion and weren't making any kind of a point by posting that? If people were looking for a thoughtless reciting of facts they could just read a news app.

I posted the title of the thread. Had you actually taken the time to read the link before going in attack mode you would have known that.

If people were looking for a thoughtless reciting of facts they could just read a news app.

If people were looking for mindless partisan attacks they could just read TNZ. Guess we were both dissapointed in this exchange.

I read the article, which you knew, because I quoted directly from it and responded to it. I just don't buy your excuse that you weren't trying to make a point with choosing that particular article. But it's okay, if you're not up to the task of defending the POV you shared here for no reason whatsoever, I won't hold you to it.

Yeah, it's a really juvenile attitude and wouldn't be accepted in most any other profession. The constant adulation of cops in the US is what allows bullshit like this to happen.

I've posted many times my feelings on this subject along with articles pertaining to different points of view. Not sure what it was with this one that got your knickers in such a twist.

The article was from the local news in baltimore and had two points of view pertaining to the topic. Which one do I supposedly have oh great reader of minds?

Here's a suggestion, next time someone posts an article that provides an update on what's happening in Baltimore, try not to go into full Chris Mathews mode on them. You might find it helps drive more fruitful discussion here .

Well I'd like to say that's sad but BigJake posted a Martin Luther King quote that says rioting is cool and he's obviously cool with it as well, so I don't want to offend his delicate sensibilities.

The chant of "Black lives matter" is quite ironic considering the majority of the people hurt physically and financially from riots tend to be black people. Also interesting that they almost never attack government instillations where they know trained people with guns are. They always go after businesses and private homes where the likelihood of resistance is zero. Bunch of cowards.

Looks like the violence escalated over the memorial day weekend with nine people dead as gang violence continues to be a problem.

I think the poll speaks for itself. Some claim that there is a "gray area" in the discussion that is lacking in the poll, however I think the subject is pretty clear cut. It was either wrong or it was right, and most people clearly have the sense that it was wrong (thankfully). It is just a handful of individuals that insist the rioting was "justified," and a few that don't have the nerve to make the call at all.

It is sad when people choose to care more about the well being of criminals than their victims.

It's sadder when people seem to care about the victims of violent unrest more than the deep social problems that caused the unrest in the first place.

If only anybody posting comments here were, in fact, supportive of the looters and criminals. Caring about the root causes of unrest isn't excusing looters and criminals.

It's the first step towards preventing more looters and criminals and saving both property and lives.
