DC ENTERTAINMENT AND WARNER BROS. LAUNCH "DC SUPER HERO GIRLS" INITIAT

Re: DC ENTERTAINMENT AND WARNER BROS. LAUNCH "DC SUPER HERO GIRLS" INI

I like the art design. Poison Ivy looks hilariously covered up in a very sensible dress

Re: DC ENTERTAINMENT AND WARNER BROS. LAUNCH "DC SUPER HERO GIRLS" INI

I have mixed feelings about it. It's cool to have something for young girls but at the same time it plays up the distinction i.e. "Leave us alone! Go play with your girly heroes!".

I agree. I like the idea of promoting DC's heroines, it's refreshing to see DC doing something upbeat and targeted at young audiences, and it's great to see the DC heroines wearing actual practical outfits instead of bathing suits and stripper wear. But I'm troubled by the idea of segregating "girl stuff" from "boy stuff." There's already too much of that in the toy and marketing industry. It used to be that toys, games, and the like were marketed to both sexes at once. Growing up, I played with LEGOs and Lincoln Logs and such alongside my sister and the girl next door (although they had Barbies and I didn't). These days, we have LEGO sets marketed "for girls" that are incompatible with the ones "for boys." There's an alarming amount of gender segregation and stereotyping in marketing for children, and from what I've seen, lots of kids don't like it and would rather be free to enjoy whatever they want rather than being told they're only allowed to like one set of toys or the other.

DC should present heroes of both sexes as role models for both sexes. Lots of girls like male heroes, and just as many boys would probably like female heroes if society would just stop brainwashing them into thinking they're not supposed to.

I feel the same way. What you say about segregating boy and girl stuff is true. Look at Disney for example. They make billions of dollars a year on their Princess line of toys and merchandise alone. While they're Marvel stuff is aimed solely at boys. This came up recently again with Black Widow. She's been in 4 Marvel movies and there are still no toys of her being made.

This article is dated but it shows how much money Disney makes off it's properties.

I think the Princess line alone brings in $3 billion a year for the House of Mouse. Maybe more now, since Frozen became such a hit.

Back to WB/DC, there was that situation a few months ago with that little girl who asked DC where all the female heroes were.

While there are plenty of female heroes in both Marvel and DC, not all of them are accessible.

Hopefully DC introduces more in the future to this show. Geoff Johns said more will be introduced later.

Personally I find their initial roster boring. I mean they could've done better than pick 3 characters from Batman's line, and included more heroines with powers to the team.

QFT. I can't even find proper Wonder Woman T-Shirts for either grown men (like me) or boys (like my nephews) here in Germany. It was hard enough to find a Justice League T-Shirt for me that actually included Wonder Woman.

Re: DC ENTERTAINMENT AND WARNER BROS. LAUNCH "DC SUPER HERO GIRLS" INI

Then again, Janelle Asselin wrote an interesting essay today discussing the positives of doing this as a specifically girl-targeted thing:

I think she makes some good points -- basically, that it's unfortunate we have such gender-segregated marketing, but doing something like this may be the only way to make superheroes accessible for young girls within the restrictions of that sucky system. Which is at least a start toward bridging the gap.

Re: DC ENTERTAINMENT AND WARNER BROS. LAUNCH "DC SUPER HERO GIRLS" INI

^^ The start was fifty years ago during the Women's Lib Era. The ensuing generations have totally screwed it up.

I have mixed feelings about it. It's cool to have something for young girls but at the same time it plays up the distinction i.e. "Leave us alone! Go play with your girly heroes!".
Exactly. Unfortunately it's typical of how the current generation deals with women and minorities-- patronizing and condescending.

I'm confused by this.

Girls are supposed to be allowed to like any toys they like, but you're complaining that they don't have Black Widow dolls to play with (even though there are tons)? What?

Re: DC ENTERTAINMENT AND WARNER BROS. LAUNCH "DC SUPER HERO GIRLS" INI

It's nice to see them finally doing something for the young girl fans that are out there. Sure it would be nice if this kind of stuff wasn't always segregated by sex, but as long as it is, I think this is a really nice thing for them to do. I don't have anybody in the target audience in my life, but if I did I would be more than happy to get this for them.

Re: DC ENTERTAINMENT AND WARNER BROS. LAUNCH "DC SUPER HERO GIRLS" INI

Apparently my nephew and niece drive my sister crazy lately with the Teen Titans cartoon. It's a silly show but I think it actually does a good job of mixing the girls and boys. It's too bad the serious stuff seems harder to pull off with the same level of ease.

Re: DC ENTERTAINMENT AND WARNER BROS. LAUNCH "DC SUPER HERO GIRLS" INI

Yeah, I guess this is better than nothing. Though the cynic in me considers this just a fix over stuff from the past, like the T-shirt fiasco of last year, "Training to be Batman's Wife", and all.

Having gone to my Toysrus, Target and Walmart, I can tell you there are no Age of Ultron Black Widow or Scarlet Witch toys. Last year, I did not recall seeing any Black Widow toys for Captain America TWS either. There were Falcon toys but no Black Widow. However they're were Gamora toys for GOTG.

There is a notable disparity there.

A bias towards green women?

Was there a Star Trek action figure for Rachel Nichols' character?

Re: DC ENTERTAINMENT AND WARNER BROS. LAUNCH "DC SUPER HERO GIRLS" INI

I love the design for Harley! That looks better than her current New 52 gear. And Ivy's outfit... it's so whimsical!

We actually have a couple of Marvel Legends figures of comic book Scarlet Witch and Carole Danvers Captain Marvel at the Wal-Mart I where I work in the Toys department. They are the second and third women action figures I've seen outside of the girls section in the entire year or two I've worked back there. They have a Quinjet which drops a motorcyle with a small action figure on it. The figure is Captain America, rather than Widow.

In case anyone is wondering the first action figure of a woman I saw at our store was TMNT movie April O'Neil.
