Star Trek Online Discussion Thread - Delta Rising

It's iffy playing an Engineering character after relying so much on Science 'powers' to get myself rejuvenated...lol

My Delta character, a half-human/half-Vulcan character is currently at fifty-something. She - yes, another 'she' - has an assault cruiser which I'm enjoying w/it's particular ENG powers (e.g. something to deflect shield dissipation). And, even before that, I was enjoying the Celestial-class vessel.

While I don't have my triage and other medical powers as aforementioned, I do like creating land mines and quantum mortar launchers...and phaser cannons. I just have to keep myself and my BOFFs filled with large hyposprays.

I was thinking about creating an Andorian or Romulan tactical officer....but I've found I like the toys the science and engineering characters have to play with. I did have a Romulan tactical before, but I deleted that character since I wanted to focus on my Fed science character.

I may create an Andorian or Romulan science or engineering character later.

I have two mains: a tactical Rommie, and an engineering Fed Andorian. Engineers are awesome :) Train one of your team engineers in shield generator, stay within the field, make some mortanrs, crouch and you're almost invincible ;) Well, my Andorian is, because they're quite sturdy. :D My TAC Romulan is a lot easier to kill ;)

So season 10 is almost here. I thought maintenance would start a hour later than it did. Doesn't bother me, as I'll be going to bed soon. Look forward to finish off Uneasy Allies again, as I'm wanting to get the personal shields, and then do it again for the kit. AT "Destination Unknown" - shouldn't take me that long to finish it off.

Did the 250 marks to 2500 dilithium and 500 marks to 5000 dilithium projects make it to the live servers?

I was planning to convert my close to 100k marks (spread over 10 characters), but I couldn't find these projects.

I am having mixed feelings so far about the new Sector Space update that came with season 10. I like much the new scale of the map and the new planets/star system models.
But I very much dislike the new lighting of the map. For some reason the ships appear either very flat looking or too dark. Also the bloom effects seem to have vanished..I miss my glowing nacelles(I first though my graphics were set to low or something.)

Also the warp streaks are missing but seems this is a bug, from what I saw from the STO forums.

Have you specifically checked your bloom slider? It is not really a matter of low graphic settings, you can adjust bloom manually. The patch might have reset it to a low default.

The darkness in space is deliberate.
I can see how it makes some ships look bland but it looks glorious with my Galaxy class which has a lot of lighted windows and such. Might post a screenshot later. :)

Edit: here are the promised screenshots:

Spend a lot of time tonight, just flying around. Space looks so much bigger. Yet to any of the new content, might try the missions in the next few days and the PvE over the weekend.

Initial impression is that they need to up the speed in sector space, now takes a LONG time to get from place to place if your transwarp is in cooldown.

It already felt brutal being in an old ship and being limited to warp 6 with no TW as a Delta Recruit, imagine this will be brutal when I log in with them to play now. Felt slow in my Lvl60 maxed ship...

I like that the walls have come down and the new look of sector space, except for the lighting of it. It's just too dark, if there were only segments of it that were like that, it'd be cool. (They could have the barrens from ENT or the void from VOY) but those areas are what everything looks like.

More realistic, yes, but not better.

I have been wondering lately,

am I the only one who does not like the direction they are taking the storyline in? It does not feel like anything Star Trek I remember would produce.

Seems to me like they are borrowing too much from the Stargate Ori storyline (which I hate with passion) becaise they want the "dark sorcerer / magic" villain which would appeal to wider MMO-player base.

IMHO, whatever they are doing now with Iconians, they could have done very well with Undine, and it would feel much more right in my book (maybe even the spheres stuff, who's to say Iconians could not have created them in ancient past).
Some time around the original launch, there was a book called "Needs of Many" which was describing the "great Undine war". I would have loved to arrive to that point instead.

Further, unless the game really has one or less year of lifespan left, what are they going to do after Iconian war is over? Find another villain, who was manipulating Iconians to attack?

What are your opinions?

To complain about the Iconian conflict now is a little late. They had this seeded into rhe game from day one. What we are now seeing is the beginning of the end of this story.
The can finally shed the baggage from this story after they wrap up.
There are endless options to go next to.

A Dominion revisit in the Gamma Quadrant is high on my wishlist to see what Odo has done wirh the Great Link by now.
Future Guy still needs a reveal.
The Tholian Conflict is something that should get some resolution, which you can always tie into more storieswith the Mirror universe.
If all else fails, space nazis!

indeed

I would also love to go to Gamma quadrant and deal with Dominion, would be great.
One of the things that are rather high on my wishlist is a storyline about Spherebuilders.
Just now thinking about it, they could tie it into aftermath of Iconian story. Iconians are messing with subspace / fabric of the universe / whatever. Maybe thats what attracts the SBs to think our universe can be converted into their realm...?

So far, I'm getting lots of war. That's okay, sometimes, but I want more exploration. I also want them to setup trade routes so I can choose to do something like trade goods around the galaxy. I think it would be a great way to earn credits, and it would be neat to trade with someone in the Delta quadrant, bringing those goods back to, say, station K7, and selling them there. Just let there be content besides constant battles. It can't be that difficult to do, can it?

It's a MMORPG. By definition it's mostly battles. Not saying I like it - I don't - but that's what gamers expect from an RPG.

That's why I like New Romulus so much: you can also do other things. I wish they had more adventure zones like that.

As a newbie, I still keep discovering a lot of things, and today I discovered that there are many accolades to get on New Romulus and Nimbus by doing some stuff and discovering some hidden gems and corners. :)

As for dark sector space, I'm not complaining  My ships look awesome :D

True, but it wouldn't hurt them to add more of a trade/exploration aspect to it. I'm tired of pewpewpew, but I want to stick around in the Star Trek universe. There's just nothing to do if you do, though.

...
I love the new sector space layout. It's very expansive, and feels much more, um, spacey.

I personally like the current Storyline direction; ST does need to go into some darker territory and go on about somethings that can make Trek a more modern storyline.

But I must say I was not that hip on Legacy of Romulus. I know that may come as a shock to some but I honestly felt that it borrowed some stuff that was from Battlestar Galactica with a Star Trek overlay which was a bit.... meh to me, not that taking inspiration from other franchises is a bad thing (Star Trek honestly does it all the time), but what this storyline did was make it obvious, to me at least. I respect the idea of taking inspiration from BSG (I did say that the next Trek series should take a hint of inspiration from BSG in the Future of Trek subforum.), but there is a different from complete copy pasting BSG and emulating the feel and tone of BSG.

Plus I think with the way the storyline is going now, and with the current updates of the game, it feels more like Star Trek than it did when the game started all those years ago! (I mean really.... compared to back then and now... it's like they're doing a wonderful job in comparison.)

Well, they do have the option of doing trades and negotiations on some planets and ships that can be found in sector space but entire missions built around such? :vulcan:

Yes.

Yes, that is what I was thinking myself at first, so I checked my bloom settings( everything is set to High/max).
I tried turning the settings on/off and so forth but no effect.
Either this is a bug of some kind or the Devs just decided to turn the bloom down in the entire game by default..not sure it makes the stuff look better though IMHO.

Here are some screenshots for comparison:
(Bloom settings on High and intensity is 100 percent on all)
