WTF was this guy doing? (planet Nimbus 3, in the beginning of ST5)

xvicente

Captain
Captain
digging what? looking for water? dilithium? rare ores? in such shallow holes? is he stupid?

He had previously burried some water to hide it from other scavengers-but had forgotten exactly where- per the novel.

If your only tool is a hammer--everything looks like a nail.

If thats how deep your device digs--thats howw far down you look.

If that failed he was going to shoot his rock gun at the ground hoping for a geyser of water to shoot up.

His wife, Zaara, had died the night before. "And J’Onn had stumbled outside, dazed by grief, unaware of himself or his surroundings, only of his loss. It was midmorning before he came to himself and saw the dozens of fresh holes he’d apparently drilled the night before in his feverish search for water. By then the obsession had hold of him, and he could not stop. With both Zaara and the land gone, there was nothing left. He was vaguely aware that he intended to drill until he found water or died of heatstroke. Considering the harsh afternoon sun, he reasoned he had an excellent chance of accomplishing the latter." - from J.M. Dillard's novelization

He used to be known as 'the man who kills on sight', Morgan Earp, but a drinking problem reduced him to drilling holes in dirt instead of people.

Yep he became "the man who drills all night."

Who knows perhaps he's dead and doesn't even know it.

3 EXT. DRY LAKE BED - DAY 3

Camera pans an arid expanse of scorched earth. J'ONN,
a ragged and malnourished homesteader of some alien
race, toils beneath a blazing sun, his back to camera.
He sinks an augering device into the ground, drilling
in vain for water. There are many hundreds
of holes in the earth around him.

J'onn reacts to the clop of approaching hooves. He
tenses, then whirls around clutching a crude home-made
pipe gun.

There you go.

Come and listen to a story about a man named J'onn
A poor desert rat, barely kept his family wet,
Then one day he was shootin at some dirt,
And up through the ground came a bubblin wet.

Water that is, H20, unmade tea.

Well the first thing you know ol J'onn's a millionaire,
Kinfolk said "J'onn move away from there"
Said "Paradise City is the place you ought to be"
So they loaded up the shuttle and moved to the Oasis.

I see your Hillbillies theme and raise you some Croce.........

He was bald, bald J'onn Brown
Thirstiest man in the whole damn town
thirstier than old Sybok
and drier than a desert rock

He got custom desert auger
He got study shovel too
He got a high powered rock gun
With some extra rocks tucked up in his shoe

Now J'onn he a digger and he likes his fancy holes
And likes to go a digging and looking for tasty moles

Well Friday 'bout a week ago
J'onn drippin' sweat
And at the edge of his land
He saw some dirt and oh that dirt looked wet,

Well he cast his eyes on upon it
and the trouble soon began
Old J'onn Brown learned a lesson
'bout messin' with the dirt Of a jealous man

Well the two men took to fightin'
and when they pulled them from the dirt
J'onn Brown had taken a Unicorn knife
Where it really, really hurts

He was bald, bald J'onn Brown
Thirstiest man in the whole darn town.

Aww I like the Zaara version. It's nice to think that J'onn had someone, even if she died. To be honest in TFF I gave more shit about this guy than about the main plot, I mean look at that poot pathetic bugger. He's the sort you want to pat over the head and then disinfect your hand very thoroughly.

Another point in my theory that TFF would have been better if Nimbus III had been the main attraction instead of a waystation.

Originally J'onn had been born on Mars and lived for centuries there as a scientist, husband and father. A Plague destroyed his race and left him the sole survivor. sometime later an earth scientist seeking to make contact with mars had inadvertantly managed to transport J'onn to earth. J'onn who then had the shapeshifting powers natural to his native race. took on a form inspired by the burgeoning costumed heroes of the day. He joined their ranks and fought beside them for several decades. when most of his friends died he set out into space again and eventually assumed the guise of a simple farmer. as the next few centuries came and went he lost his memory of what he once was and his powers had failed him leaving him locked in the form he had last taken. For a brief time J'onn had found a new happiness with a woman on the small planetoid Nimbus III however the harsh climate proved too much for his wife and J'onn found himself alone again until a Vulcan named Sybok found him digging futily for water in the desert wastes. Sybok helped J'onn rediscover himself and his true strength and power returned he maintained his secret identity however and held on to the human form he had assumed. J'onn has since returned to Mars and is a leading archeologist helping the federation uncover the long lost ancient history and culture of the once great Martian civilization. Yes....
J'onn

is none other than
J'onn J'onzz!
The Martian Manhunter!

He was looking kewl for all the moviegoers who had imbibed the Mad Max "raggedy dude" trope. Just before Sybok throws back his hood and laughs like no man ever. I know it gets some love, but so many pieces of this flick are just awful.

The worst part about Sybok is the unexplained haircut he gets right before heading down to Sha Ka Ree. Every other moment is awesome.

It's all he has.

Is there any behind-the-scenes story on how Rex Holman got the part in STV? Was it just a normal audition, or was he specifically sought out due to his TOS appearance?
