Matt smith real reason for leaving (nsfw)

Doctorwhovian

Fleet Captain
Reports indicate he was involved in the hotel incident which also messed up his relationship with Daisy Lowe. Nobody wants to say it so I will.

I thought so. That's why my umbrella went missing.

Well, as they say, if the pumpkin pie isn't fly you got to catch a kite to ride.

But seriously. Does the window have ears?

"The hotel incident."

I'm aware of the incident in New York when Karen Gillen was found completely naked in the hotel hallway and locked out of her room in the summer of 2011.

Are you trying to suggest that Matt was involved in that and he and Karen were... shall we say... engaged in rumpus wumpus?

If so...

First, I'm not surprised. From all indications, Matt and Karen (and Arthur, too) were extremely close off the set, just because they were the only people they saw regularly for nine months out of the year.

Second, I don't care. Ultimately, where consenting adults get their fun is up to them and not anyone else's concern. If it's true, I'm sorry for Daisy Lowe, as she seems like a very nice person and she and Matt looked cute together.

Third, I don't see how or why such an incident would lead to Matt Smith qutting the series. Unless you're trying to intimate that the BBC fired him for misbehavior.

Look, I'm disappointed that Matt left the series; I hoped he would outlast Moffat. He had his reasons for leaving, and the critical word in that is his. It's not our business why he decided to leave Doctor Who. Frankly, I think he was looking for his exit from pretty much the moment he started -- see his first appearance on Craig Ferguson's show where he's very cagey about his future in Who and he seems like he's already checked out -- and he left pretty much the moment he could. I'm not saying he didn't have fun or enjoy the show, but he had his sights on bigger things and Doctor Who was a stepping stone to them.

Didn't that incident take place in 2011? Which would have been probably their second series on the show together? Matt left in 2013 two whole years AFTER said incident, so if the OP is trying to imply punishment from the BBC for this, they sure as hell took a long time to getting around to it.

This sounds so gossipy and tabloid-ish lol.

I spent five minutes Googling.

Karen was locked out of the hotel in 2011. In was reported in June 2011, such as this Daily Fail article which says she and Matt were on a promotional tour. The Express says it happened in April, when she and Smith were in New York for the promotional screening of "The Impossible Astronaut"/"Day of the Moon." Which makes sense to me; I couldn't think of a reason why Matt and Karen would have been in New York in June as there was nothing to promote then (Doctor Who was on the mid-season break that year), and SDCC was at the end of July.

The scenario in which the BBC wanted him dismissed for an early 2011 incident yet he stayed with the program through the end of 2013 doesn't make any sense to me. If someone high up wanted him sacked in 2011, they simply would have sacked him and we'd have had a different Doctor for series 7 and the anniversary.

I guess the question is when did Matt decide to leave? I seem to recall Moffat saying that he knew Matt was waffling and designed series 7's production to keep him as the Doctor through the anniversary, which means that Matt may well have made the decision in 2011.

It is my understanding that he decided to leave due to his growing interest in Hollywood, and he'd accepted the "Lost River" gig with Ryan Gosling (and for which he shaved his head for).

What the OP is trying to "report" seems implausible to me. Without any posted sources for his post...this just seems like made up gossip.

I certainly think there was more to his decision to leave than Lost River. I think like Tennant and Hamlet, that was a consequence and not a cause.

I think his "team" breaking up with the departures of Karen and Arthur was a part of it. I think his desire to be someplace more cosmopolitan than Cardiff was a part of it. (I've said before that I think if they could have filmed permanently in New York, he'd have stayed. Even London might've done the trick.) And I think his recognition that the role wasn't a challenge for him was also a part of it.

I don't think he had a blow-up with Moffat and quit. Nor do I think the BBC sacked him over a promotional tour.

Eccleston, Tennant and Smith all seems leave rather suddenly, maybe we'll find out and maybe not but it's really not important, the show's in good hands with Capaldi as the Doctor.

How does this qualify as NSFW? False advertising just to make people look at the thread. Which worked, sorry to say.

Eh? Granted, Eccleston did leave suddenly, but the reasons for that are known in broad strokes. Tennant and Smith weren't really sudden. Tennant even had a whole publicity event planned to announce his departure.
