Re: What Enterprise Do You Prefer? NuENterprise NCC 1701 or TOS NCC 17

As an aside, and my own personal preference - I love the nacelles on Abrams' Enterprise, and think it looks proportionally fine, in relation to it's other components.

Funnily enough: I'm also a huge fan of the Connie Refit (TPM), but on occasion, I find myself questioning the size of her nacelles - which can feel / look quite thin/slender, from certain angles, and not always agreeable.

Just my own predilections.

Overall: My fav versions of the Enterprise 1701 are both the TPM (Refit) and the Abrams' Enterprise: both have the primary hull / saucer / necks that I like (design-wise), which for me are the deal breakers (in terms of Trek designs).

Re: What Enterprise Do You Prefer? NuENterprise NCC 1701 or TOS NCC 17

It actually seem more fantastical than the original enterprise.

What about one fictional spaceship makes it more fantastical than another? Both go really fast (as fast as the plot needs) and both shot energy weapons and torpedoes. Both have a similar shape.

1. What's wrong with fantastical when you're trying to excite an audience of people with an amazing starship? isn't that the whole point?

2. It can be both realistic and fantastic at the same time, something this design achieves.

I was just responding to your earlier thread about the Abrams Enterprise being more mathematically correct. I disagree I think its no more mathematically correct than the old TOS model or the TMP model. The abrams enterprise looks no better mathematically then even the TOS enterprise.

Any poll that does not have the Sombreoprise as an option is an invalid poll.

Truth be told, it's been a long time since I've seen that beauty of a ship that is the Sombreroprize.

Madre de Dios! Lol!

Clearly the ship is run by Cylons....or it's main computer is the same as the Knight Industries Two Thousand. (K.I.T.T). :)

The ship, like every other ship...is run by Robau.

LOL! I think I have seen this before I joined Trektoday. It was a few years ago. Funny that its still around. Yeah I should have added it.

Re: What Enterprise Do You Prefer? NuENterprise NCC 1701 or TOS NCC 17

The ship seems to have grown over time, even canonically. Pike specifically mentioned the Enterprise having a crew of "203 lives" when he was complaining about the burden of command to Boyce. The number over-doubled to 430 by the time Kirk comes around in TOS, mentioned many times in dialog. I think the TMP refit got up to over 500, but I have no specific citation for that. Maybe the original TMP blueprints? Can't remember...

Begs the question, how did the number of crew double between Pike and Kirk? The ship's overall shape and size appeared to remain constant. Did Pike's Enterprise go out with a lot of empty undeveloped space that was later built-up with crew quarters? We know there were several physical refits during that time, mostly identified by the different bridge shape and warp nacelle greebles. From an interior POV, we never saw Pike's quarters, the super-long corridor or the trippy briefing room since then, either. It stands to reason they would have done some major reworking of the interior as well to accommodate the extra personnel.
Or it could be just that Pike had a smaller crew than Kirk's. The crew complement for any starship could vary considerably depending on its current mission, deployment duration, theater of operations, etc. The original Enterprise may even have been able to carry a crew of 1,000 if necessary, but probably not indefinitely, IMO.

I know in universe it is suppose to be the same ship, but there are definite proportional differences between the pilot and series versions of the Enterprise.

RDJ's Sherlock is good, but totally relies on Jude Law's Watson to push it over the top.

Isn't that always the case with Sherlock ?

Hmm. Interesting question. A good Watson always helps, but I suspect that some Holmes's would be memorable regardless of who is playing Watson.

The first example that comes to mind is Peter Cushing in the 1959 version of The Hound of Baskervilles. The guy playing Watson was perfectly fine, and gets points for not playing the part as comic relief like Nigel Bruce in the Rathbone movies, but I can't say he was all that memorable or that he added a lot to the movie.

But Cushing made an excellent Holmes regardless.

And I can't even remember who played Watson opposite John Neville, Stewart Granger, Christopher Lee, or Charlton Heston . . . .

Re: What Enterprise Do You Prefer? NuENterprise NCC 1701 or TOS NCC 17

I notice a distinct lack of mentioning of Jeremy Brett? (I know very few Homeses, so, no support here, just an amazement that a common name I've heard hasn't been mentioned,)

Additionally, didn't Tom Baker, also have a turn as Holmes? I'd be interested in seeing that portrayal

Re: What Enterprise Do You Prefer? NuENterprise NCC 1701 or TOS NCC 17

TOS Enterprise for sure.

If the nacelles on the JJ version weren't so out of proportion by comparison to the rest of the ship (they could be the exact same design, just scaled down in size), the photon torpedo bays scaled up in size, and if at the neck were moved forward slightly (IE closer to proportions of the TMP refit), the JJprise would look better to me.

Totally agree the nacelles on Abrams enterprise are way to big. Maybe guy who designed the ship for the movie was trying to compensate for something. :guffaw:
