Transformers Universe?

Transformers: The Next Generation
Transformers: Deep Space Prime
Transformers: Voyager-class
Transformers: Age of Unicron
Transformers...

Transformers Into Darkness
The Decepticons Strike Back
Episode 7: The Energon Awakens
Prime v Voltron: Dawn of Crossovers

I think some of these new "cinematic universe" things are getting a bit over hyped. In that having some sequels and a spin off doesn't really equal a cinematic universe.

Puss n Boots was a spin off of Shrek, which also had a few sequels, but you don't necessarily have to go "ooh there's now a Shrek cinematic universe."
Or the upcoming Minions movie doesn't mean there's now a big Dispicable Me 'cinematic universe.'

Red Sonja / Conan.

Sequels and spin offs have been around for ages.

I suppose what is different with universes is having a game plan that takes several years to complete, and announcing that plan upfront, rather than make sequel after sequel until one bombs.

Not that I'd ever tire of a Transformers franchise, but I do find it odd Trek wouldn't be top of Paramount's plans.

Trek isn't Paramount's biggest property anymore. It's also a property they no longer have free reign to do anything they want with.

First off, this cinematic universe thing is starting to get out of hand. I guess we have Marvel to blame for this, but really it's not their fault. Fans wanted a cinematic universe for marvel movies and it makes sense, but note very franchise needs one. Second is after the last one that I got suckered into watching, I'm done. I'm done watching these movies in theaters and I'm done paying to see them. Unless I see 80s looking Tranformers and no Michael Bay involvement and a really, really good plot, I'm out. They really need to earn my trust again as a fan. I gave them plenty of chances to really entertain me and I sat though every movie in theaters and I'm just done. I can't sit through another one.

I think to qualify as a full-fledged cinematic universe, there should be at least two spin-off movies, ideally running concurrently with the main series, or two at least two concurrent series (à la MCU). By this metric, X-Men is already a cinematic universe, qualifying with the release of The Wolverine, and it would also mean the '99 Mummy series is one, if one counts the two DTV Scorpion King prequels as well as the theatrical spinoff film.

By that same somewhat arbitrary, measure, Shrek doesn't qualify until there's a Puss in Boots sequel, though one could make an appeal based on the Netflix series and dvd short films.

I wonder what they'll come up with. With what's been established with the movies I'm not sure how you construct movies around that. It worked well with the Marvel pan to have individual movies and bring them together but I have a harder time thinking of what they'd do for individual movies int he Transformers universe.

I always liked those trippy post-movie space episodes of the Transformers cartoon but I'm not so sure that would translate well at the box office. Between Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars maybe something in that vein would fly?

Maybe like Captain America they could have a period piece? I'm not sure how they'd set it up but a movie set in the 70s with lots of muscle cars and such could be fun. You could have a funky painted van, a classic VW, an Evil Knieval/Easy Rider chopper that would transform into some crazy looking robot and so on. The Decepticons could be the real cause of the energy crisis.

Wreckers movie please ?

And 'Yaeyz', Nick Roche IS a bad man !

It's funny how hard it is to suss out what the story is about from that link.

The fact that "The premise of the series was generated editorially" should not be more prominent than details of the plot and its strengths.

True ! This is the Amazon entry -

The thread name got my hopes up: "Transformers Universe" was the name of the 4 Who's Who style issues that covered all the characters from the Marvel comics run, back in the late 80s.

And to be honest, I'd get more excited about a new discussion here about that old 4 issue set than I anticipate ever getting about any Michael-Bay-affiliated Transformers movie.

Just in case anyone with any power over any of this is reading: 1. Kick Michael Bay out and get a character-oriented director. 2. Get the writers from either the Marvel or IDW comics involved in writing your films. 3. The Transformers ARE the characters. It's okay to have a human-perspective character like Spike Witwicky was in the old G1 cartoons, but the STORY is that of the Transformers, not of some human(s) the Transformers interact with. 4. To that end, film most of your movies with the camera perspective showing characters like Bumblebee at "person size", and scale from there, even if that makes humans seem small. That's okay. More than okay. That would be perfect. 5. Feel free to use the original bright primary colors for the characters, and at the very least make sure the characters are easily distinguished from one another. 6. The VOICES of these characters matter - if you can't get the G1 actors (and sadly some of them have passed on), use sound-alikes. 7. I understand that Volkswagon won't cooperate with Bumblebee being one of their cars anymore. Well, beg them. Failing that, this isn't an excuse to make him a muscle car or completely rewrite who he is. Make him a similar car - maybe a Mini Cooper, or a Ford Festiva, or (since you seem to have a deal with GM) a Chevy Sonic. Something of similar stature. 8. Gestalts. Do them correctly, and these movies can rule the world. I don't know what the hell that was in the second Bay movie, but it what it was NOT was Devastator. 9. You may think you don't NEED the fandom with the ticket sales you're already getting. You're probably right. BUT, the people seeing the movies now who *aren't* the fandom largely don't care and just want to see big robots fight - so they *would* still come if you made the fandom happy, too. And you may not need that, but you WANT that, because if you do it right, like you care, then we will give you positive word of mouth rather than the negative we're largely giving you now - and that can only put more butts in the seats and cash in your coffers. )

Well said. I'd also add. Make the robots look like more than scrap metal that somehow formed into a humanoid shape. Give them actual human-like faces. If you do Megatron, make him a giant gun or tank or something close to the 80s cartoon. Make Optimus a truck like we saw at the begging of the last movie. Bring back starscream and don't be afraid to give him color. If you bring back the dinobots, make them look like actual dinosaurs that actually existed. Want to know how to do it, they scan a natural history museum. Boom, you're done. These characters need to look like something with actual faces.

Prime' face is too human though - looks way better with the faceplate.
I agree, the faceplate is better. I think you could find a way to take the cartoon faces and make them look more realistic and modern. The way they did Megatron and Starscream drove me nuts, you can barely make out a face. There's got to be a better way to make it look somewhat alien and robotic, but still kind of human-like.
