Looking vs. Queer as Folk

Which show do you think provides a better take on the gay community?

I haven't seen Looking (Which is ending with a TV movie), but if you are comparing it to QaF then I would say neither.

However QaF was in a world that was a lot darker for gays, looked like gay marriage would be banned Constitutionally, and now it looks like we will have gay marriage for everyone within this year.

That said Qaf is a horrible mess of a show, the last couple seasons were not needed, and should be forgotten.

Never heard of Looking. The Amercian version of QAF didn't really do the gay community any favours: drug use, promiscuous sex, etc but it was very entertaining. I was a huge Brian/Justin shipper!

My biggest problem with the American QAF was that, if you combine the five main gay males, they become one actual person. Like a gay Voltron that turns into a human being!

Well that's how a writer writes.

They pull off parts of themselves to push in and out of a plot.

Unless they happen to have several fully articulated personalities inside them, trying to get out.

Not really helpful if it's a team of writers devoted to five seasons' worth of material, however.

Besides, a writer could separate characters according to his/her own psyche, but a better writer is capable of creating characters that can stand on their own as fully fleshed out people, without having to depend on others to define themselves.

Haven't seen either, but since Looking is set and shot in San Francisco, that pretty much gives it the automatic win in my book. :p
