Will they go back to primeTrek after nuTrek finishes?.

Unfortunately the new guard seems to be treading old ground. I mean come on "Khaaaaaaaaaaan" again. Sheeesh.

Oh. I see what you did there.

I will admit, at first, I was mildly off-put by that, ......but then, with a second viewing, I realized life is too short to worry about such insignificant hang ups. STID still rocked, and did quite well.

Having just watched it, that whole scene with Kirk and Spock through the glass was just perfect and a good way to end Kirk's character arc -- until Spock made that scream. But that scream was such a tiny part of the movie that it shouldn't override the rest of it.

I agree.

Personally, I think that Abrams and company found themselves between a rock and a hard place. There were plenty of accusations running around that it was not "Star Trek" or not "Star Trek enough" (before responding to this point, please read the rest. Thank you :) ). So, they looked to Trek for inspiration, and TWOK is consider the the greatest Trek film ever. So, is it really that surprising that they looked to that film and revisit those moments?

Well Spock should really have yelled "Maaaaaarrrrrrrcuuusss"
since it was really his fault that Kirk dies. The Khan scfream made no sense to me. Marcus was the real villain in the movie.

Wasn't Marcus dead by then and Khan in control of the Vengeance?

So it was still Marcus that caused the damage

Screaming "Marrrrrcussssss!" wouldn't have the same resonance with those even remotely familiar with Trek lore than screaming "Khaaaaaannnnnnn!"

Whether you're overly sore about the matter, or see it as a nice nod to TWOK...."Khaaaaaaannnnnnnn!" got your attention. Not so with "Marrrrrrcusssssssss!"

He was out play, so I think Khan was the logical focus for Spock's rage.

Yeah. .. Prime Universe has its run. It was a hell of a ride. A revisit is nice. .... but going back full force to the PU would likely require newbs to play a lot of catch up.

Boldly go with the New Universe. All the connectivity that was needed was handled with Spock Prime. The torch had been passed. Time to move on.

A better way to look at it is that it would give newbies 700+ hours to look forward to.

Glass half full and all that.

I missed this post, but my bf discovered TNG thanks to the Abrams movies. Of course, since he's capable of thought, he recognizes that the two are in separate continuities. So we'll watch TNG but also anticipate the next movie together. There's no competition between the two: they're both under the one big happy family that is Star Trek.

+1, Hear Hear, Amen, Bi-La Kaifa, and 'nuff said!

Logic has no place in discussions like these!

Well, Marcus was dead, and not really a threat. Khan, however, had deliberately incited Spock by beating on Kirk in front of him, and prepared to deliver the killing blow.

So, I think that Khan was the appropriate target of Spock's rage.

Beyond that, its a brief moment in an a fun film.

Unfortunately it was a brief moment that seemed forced. Yeah they reversed the roles but big deal. I thought the whole sequence was embarrassing especially the scream and failed at trying to emulate TWOK a superior film.

Not really most newbies have probably explored the other series.

Yeah...like how the Hulk series of 30 years ago has seen a massive surge on Netflix thanks to The Avengers..

I'm unclear. Is that actually happening or was that sarcasm?

Just curious.

Sarcasm. New fans of current franchises don't give two poops about the old stuff. That was the whole point of rebooting them...to get a new audience who wouldn't otherwise be interested.

And it's not like the average Trek moviegoer didn't know about previous Trek. It's not a secret. It's also not an action packed thrill ride that will leave you on the edge of your seat asking for more. It's a 10-50 year old science fiction show that has a stigma of nerddom tattooed to it.

Different audience.

Now I have visions of the Edvard Munch painting with the Khan meme.

Some people have the opposite reaction about the whole thing. It is curious how the whole thing can be so divisive and so obviously awesome or awful, depending. I fell on the side of laughter *at* the movie with a little hide-my-face embarrassment mixed in as if a nearby family member just loudly farted at a funeral; funny and sad at the same time.

Ed Miarecki did a remarkably good job of restoring the 11-foot model given the time and limited resources made available. The model had never been exhibited at NASM in anything resembling the form in which it had been used on stage, nothing inside it was still working properly and it was physically falling apart. But don't despair, Ed will indeed be "flogged until the end of time" by trekkies online for his apparent misjudgment in paint detailing the damned thing.

Actually a few of the teenagers at my work love older trek and are all fans of TNG and even TOS.

Thanks for clearing that up. I honestly wasn't sure and was curious as to whether the new Marvel movies had actually boosted interest in the old HULK series.

Well, now, I was at a hipster bar in Grand Rapids a couple weeks ago, and one of the TVs was showing an episode of the Incredible Hulk series. The bar was too loud to hear the dialogue and they didn't have captioning turned on, but it appeared that David Banner was hulking out over the frustrations with a bad telephone booth. (I believe it was behind the same warehouse where the tripolodine was made in the MST3K episode Riding With Death.) I was strangely fascinated by this.

Later, one of the other TV turned on the Remastered Original Series episode ``Who Mourns For Adonais'', while my love and a friend and I went over to play the pinball machines.

That wasn't my point.

An overwhelming majority of the people who have just seen the nu-movies aren't going to be interested in the old stuff. They're not going to put forth the effort in watching them. It was all produced for a different audience for a different medium in two different generations.

If that were the case then we'd be talking about the overwhelming success of the TNG-remastered sets and the upcoming DS9 and VOY rereleases. But 6 years after the original movie and not a blip.

TNG has gotten about 500,000 ratings on Netflix between Dec '13 and today. TOS has received about 600k in the same time.

In the past 10 months Star Trek Into Darkness has received 3,224,831.

If they are crossing over then they're not sticking around to rate what they find.

I have to ask. What the heck is a "hipster bar"?

Eh, I'm embarrassed every time I'm watching the Ivanova Sex Dance Scene and someone walks into the room to witness it (Or even her Hand of God Speech), but, I still enjoy the Hell out of it
