The New Movies Yea or Nay

Re: The New Movies Yay or Nay

To often I feel as though I am the only person in the world (both Trek fans and non) who doesn't like the new Trek movies. I can't quite put my finger on it but something about them rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it's that they are so different from the original episodes or maybe it's the fact that they are "new" I honestly don't know. What I want to know is am I the only one?! Do you like the new movies or no? If so (or if not) why?

Im with you Brie. I don't like them so much. I like the special effects and Karl Urbans portrayal of McCoy and that's about it. So far we have had 2 movies where the enterprise had to go against a bigger and more powerful ship. The enterprise is supposed to be the best in the fleet but yet its been beaten to a pulp for 2 movies. Sheeeesh.

TMP: Enterprise against a bigger and more powerful ship
TWOK: Enterprise against a smaller ship and gets it's ass kicked.
TSFS: Enterprise against smaller ship and gets destroyed
TVH: No Enterprise
TFF: Enterprise held at a stalemate against a smaller ship, also carpet on the bridge!
TUC: Enterprise no match for smaller ship. Excelsior helps.
GEN: Enterprise destroyed by smaller ship.
FC: Enterprise taken over by Borg.
INS: Enterprise flown by joystick.
NEM: Enterprise against a bigger and more powerful ship.
ST09: Enterprise against bigger and more powerful ship.
STID: Enterprise against bigger and more powerful ship.

Not once has the Enterprise ever been portrayed as "the best in the fleet". If it were, it would make for a short and dull movie...what without all the drama and all.

Re: The New Movies Yay or Nay

To be fair, the Enterprise was facing another Starfleet ship in only two of those examples.

So perhaps the Enterprise IS one of the best ships in the fleet--it's just a fleet full of shitty ships.

Re: The New Movies Yay or Nay

The TOS Enterprise was never supposed to be the best ship in the fleet. It was one of eight ships exactly like it shown or mentioned in TOS that I can think of (Constellation, Defiant, Hood, Potemkin, Excalibur, Intrepid, Lexington, and Exeter). It wasn't even the ship for which the class was named, though the class of the ship isn't on-screen canon.

As far as going up against opponents goes, it's problematic. The only two times I can remember the Enterprise actually firing its weapons in anger in TOS movies are in TWOK and TUC. (Though I may be forgetting something. I know Kirk wanted to fire phasers in TSFS, but I don't think they worked.)

Twelve. "Tomorrow is Yesterday" :techman:

You're right, thanks. I knew twelve was mentioned in "The Making of 'Star Trek'", but I forgot Kirk saying it in that episode.

Now for the big argument: did Kirk mean twelve total or thirteen?!? :guffaw:

Re: The New Movies Yay or Nay

It's not that he doesn't have romulan features (the ears) it's that never has a tattooed romulan shown up in trek. I'm not dissing tats trust me I have quite a few, I'm dissing that it's just not romulan.

We'd never seen Romulan miners before. An echelon of society that develops its own customs. Similarly, "Nemesis" introduced us to the Remans.

Similarly, "Enterprise" showed us Orion males with green skin and facial piercings (TAS Orions were pale blue). Similarly, TOS, TMP, ST IV, TNG and ENT have all shown us Andorians with very different antennae. Similarly, TNG and DS9 have featured different Trill (ridged and spotted). And so on.

LOL, can you imagine if ST:XI had Nero and crew looking like TNG Romulans and all stiff acting? People would have gone nuts if the working class, near piracy level post apocalypse miners didn't look different.

I think you just hit the nail on the head! These are Mad Max Romulans!

INS still had the Enterprise getting its ass kicked, just by two ships instead of one. If we combined that into one ship, it would probably qualify as "bigger and more powerful ship."

But hey, if people want to see the JJPrise destroyed, prime universe history dictates that they have to go up against a smaller, inferior vessel :)

The TOS Enterprise was never supposed to be the best ship in the fleet. This right here. It was never said on screen that Enterprise was the best, or even that Kirk and his crew were all that exceptional. The original depiction in the show as that this was just another ship with just another crew in Starfleet. Except for that war game, Starfleet ships weren't really compared to each other on screen.

It was only during the movies that hero worship kicked in, and even then, it wasn't until the spinoffs that it really picked up steam. I really want to say it was TSFS that started it, with talk about the ship's age, Mr. Adventure drooling over Admiral Kirk, Scotty being appointed to work on Excelsior, etc. But in TMP, Enterprise was only called because she was the only ship in range (ugh), and TWOK, the ship was relegated to mundane cadet training duty.

As well, TNG established the idea of Enterprise being the Federation flagship, but even then, only for the E-D. None of her predecessors, as far as we know, had that distinction, and the TOS-E was never stated to have that mark. The JJPrise having that distinction is inspired by TNG.

Re: The New Movies Yay or Nay

Alright everyone I'm accepting defeat on the tattoo part. It was literally my smallest complaint but it seems to be the only one people are getting on my case about. You all are right they are a different class of romulans so the option is there. I just didn't like that touch, that's it, but there were many other aspects of the movies I didn't like even more.

"The good news is you've been given the honour of undertaking a five-year mission of exploration. The bad news is the Enterprise is taken, so you will be captaining the USS Shit-tastic."

Have you ever tried them? They look awesome but are they actually comfortable?

And thanks for that TMP tidbit, that is amazing!

I once chatted to a young guy at a convention who had authentic tabi boots he'd bought to create a Tim Drake "Robin" costume. He said they were often worn by ninjas and so are silent and very comfortable.

The ones worn by the female ambassadors in TMP resembled split-toe ballet slippers in pale mauve. The male boots seemed firmer, more like suede - I first noticed the split-toe in a b/w photo of him published in "Famous Monsters". The large colour photo in the "Make-Your-Own Costume Book" unfortunately has been cut out and placed onto a plain background, and whoever cut the pic failed to notice the uniqueness of the boots.

There is no victory or defeat in these conversations. You named a problem and other people explained why they didn't think it was a problem.

Be a pretty dull place if we only got one sides opinions on various subjects. :techman:

Re: The New Movies Yay or Nay

It's never specifically stated that they cling only to logic, becuase you're right they aren't nearly as logical as vulcans. but on many ocasions from TOS to enterprise they mention the origins of romulans and how they were a group of vulcans who disagreed with supressing emotion. That being said they do still have vastly more logical view points than most other alien races. no romulan from the origanl series to enterprise ever tattoed themselves or even mentioned the idea of it. other alien races have and hell even the first officer in Voyager had tattoos, but no episode or movie prior had a tattooed romulan. I'm not saying it's impossible I'm just saying it didn't seem to fit with prior depictions or descriptions of romulans.

There were many refreshing new aspects about the two new movies that I appreciated, but there were also a lot of things I didn't like. This was just a very minor one but it seems to be the only opinion that is really bringing a lot of controversy. Overall I just wasn't a huge fan of the movies. Not saying they were bad they just weren't what I was hoping for.
Rather than saying they are/were Logical, I would actually use the words calculating or manipulative.

I suppose defeat was the wrong word to use. I agree now that assuming all romulans don't have tattoos was premature so I'll admit that.
