Just booked my first trip to London.
I know to travel after 10 on the underground in the morning but does anyone know how long rush hour is in the evening?
I'm guessing 4pm-6pm?
Does anyone know if this is right?

Go to London! I guarantee you'll either be mugged or not appreciated. Catch the train to London, stopping at Rejection, Disappointment, Backstabbing Central and Shattered Dreams Parkway

It's better than Norfolk.

Rush hour depends where you are. Unless you are in a car, I wouldn't worry about it. London is quite traversable at any time of day.

I'd avoid London and go somewhere nice. Britain's full of nice places.

To be honest, I think it's age dependant. I spent weeks on end in London in the '80's staying with friends and loved it. I went back last year or so ago for a concert and utterly loathed it...

I must admit I'm not looking forward to it as much has my trip to York last year.
I have other week off in June and am thinking about going to whitby.

Whitby's great, very atmospheric. Don't go into the Dracula experience though...well do, but don't expect very much.

As for London and rush hour I think you're about right about it being between 4-6.

I've lived in England all my life but had never properly been to London until a few years ago. Have to say I was pretty under whelmed. I suppose all the trips to New York spoiled me; Piccadilly Circus in particular was a "is that it?" moment. One among many. And the London Eye... there's nothing to see. It's like "there's Big Ben (which isn't very big)… there's the Shard… erm… right… when can we get off this thing?"
Walking around the gardens near Buckingham Palace was nice though. But all in all it's not a bad place, I just don't see what the big deal about it is.

York is the prettiest city in England

I would suggest the Lake District or some of the little towns and villages by the Pennines. Me and some friends did the ale trail (Leeds to Manchester) on the train where you stop off at each little place and have a pint. Hebdon Bridge is on the route and is always really nice (a town full of Guardian readers, lesbians and little pubs basically)

Have to say I was pretty under whelmed

London is tedious. It basically shuts at 2am

I've had better nights out in Barnsley

Yeah I have to echo what a lot of people are saying - for me London is all about the restaurants and bars. That's pretty much it....

I have to go down there for work every now and again, so London for me is all Trains, Tubes and Premier Inns, with the occasional pub and restaurant thrown in if it's an overnighter.

I prefer Manchester.

London does have some fantastic museums though and most are free to enter.

It is easy to be unimpressed sometimes by places. I remember going to New York seeing the statue of liberty and being thoroughly underwhelmed.

Yup.

Once you take the plynth away, it's basically just the size of two houses on top of each other. I blame Ghostbusters 2. In that film, it comes to life and towers over everything. Had me believing it would be massive

I actually thought it was so big that there'd be a restaurant in the head......when I climbed all those tiny spiral stairs up to the top, all I got was a sense if how tinned tuna feel and two sarcastic Yank staff taking the piss out of my accent

But hey, for 25 dollars, I'll take it

I've got a £5 ticket for the globe so it looks like I will have to go on the underground at rush hour.

We went a couple years back and I wasn't keen on the place but RevdKathy says as a Yorkshireman I have a chip on my shoulder about London anyway. We weren't there long enough to go to the museums or anything like that, which I may have been more interesting. We did go to see Spamalot, which we really enjoyed.

From my previous visit for Eurogamer Expo, I would say avoid the tube at between the hours you suggest, it wasn't fun trying to get from Earls Court to Kings Cross at just after 5.

I really didn't like though, how a lot of the tourist attractions give their prices before VAT. And then the after VAT price (you know, the actual price) in tiny small print.

That pissed me off. This isn't America; nowhere else in Britain does that. (I say without any research whatsoever ;) )
Just a blatent "London ripoff"

I wasn't even able to go inside because it was too windy/snowy. I was similarly unimpressed with the Twin Towers (I went in early 2000). In hindsight I kinda wish I'd gone to the viewing floor of one, but I suspect that would also be really distrurbing in hindsight.

The Empire State Building, however, was fantastic!
