I won't go so far as to say it's the first time getting them right, but, seeing them with the cranial ridge piercings, it looks completely natural, and you wonder why we've never seen any of them with any piercings there before.

Because they were afraid of going too far and pissing off the primary cash cow of the franshise - fandom.

Now they aren't the only source of milk, regular people are also paying so risk is diminished, and even rewarded.

Oh, certainly. I just meant, after seeing it, it drove home, from an In-Universe perspective, it's strange (considering Human propensity foir peircings) that there had never been a Klingon in the past with such peircings.

The Klingons in STID made me realize, for the first time, just how menacing and truly alien the Klingons could be. They weren't just guys with bumpy foreheads, they were dangerous on a primal level.

To often I feel as though I am the only person in the world (both Trek fans and non) who doesn't like the new Trek movies. I can't quite put my finger on it but something about them rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it's that they are so different from the original episodes or maybe it's the fact that they are "new" I honestly don't know. What I want to know is am I the only one?! Do you like the new movies or no? If so (or if not) why?

It's called personal Bias and nostalgia. That's what it is when you can't get past that feeling.

The movies arent that different from the original, in fact it's more like TOS's sense of adventure than any of the movies or most of the sequel shows.

To often I feel as though I am the only person in the world (both Trek fans and non) who doesn't like the new Trek movies. I can't quite put my finger on it but something about them rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it's that they are so different from the original episodes or maybe it's the fact that they are "new" I honestly don't know. What I want to know is am I the only one?! Do you like the new movies or no? If so (or if not) why?

It's not a surprise to me that any long-time Trek fan is not in love with the new movies. Did I like them? They're OK. I thought the effects were spectacular and a couple of crew members were awesome in their portrayals...

... my perception of ST was already colored by what I already knew about the franchise, which was considerably more than the casual Trek fan or the movie-goer that shows up hand-in-pocket and buys a ticket because he/she doesn't like anything else at the matinee that night.

Chang's eyepatch was screwed into place (ST VI)!

There was a Klingon on the Genesis planet (ST III) with lots of little decorations in his hair, IIRC.

Yes, that seems to be the case with many. I had watched the shows a few times, but I was absolutely blown away when I saw Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Although I can see that many on these forums consider that movie to be lame and blah, it actually blew me away at the time. I was mesmerized by it. I became a real fan that night.

Not so. Saldana is a marvelous actor, and certainly not going to be consigned to opening hailing frequencies and randomly announcing that she's frightened.

Agreed. I mean, if facing a horde of Klingons, getting involved in a deadly firefight, asserting her right to be assigned to the best ship in the fleet, her expertise in linguistics has saving the ship from ambush, and beaming down to help confront a genetic superman isn't dynamic enough, then the original Captain Kirk was a staid, boring lightweight, and Spock put us all to sleep. Fortunately, there's no way that's accurate.

I love that this Uhura is so strong. Saying, "Let me do my job and do what I know to do to save this situation if I can" is strong. I was cheering and scared for her at the same time as I watched STID both times in the theaters. Even watching on TV or on my tablet, I feel the same. Scared because going up against a squad of Klingons, especially these really scary ones, is risky. They will rip her apart. I cheer because she's finally being portrayed as strong. She's not just Spock's girlfriend; she's a strong woman in her own right. She doesn't need him to be strong; she already is.

The only time we saw TOS Uhura act anything like that was in "Mirror Mirror" when she had to handle the alt-Sulu on the bridge without Kirk or anyone else around. The difference is that she had to convey how scared she was to Kirk and get his reassurance she could do it before she did it. This Uhura basically says, "Get the hell out of my way and let me do my job." Then when it gets tough, she groins the Klingon with his own knife. Much better.

maybe it was the klingons then I know one race they vastly changed their look. I only saw the movie once since I was not a fan.

There were helmet-wearing Klingons in "Into Darkness" (and one revealed), and cut scenes (see bonus features) in the 2009 film.

But TOS changed the Klingons in each appearance (complexion), and then the movies started playing with a huge variety of cranial shapes in TMP, ST III, ST VI and the 24th century Klingons. Different every time we saw them.

The one Klingon in STiD, with his cool cranial piercings and unusual eyes, could easily fit in with such variety.

I thought the Klingon look was quite unique in its idea and execution. Since we really have not seen Klingons in this new alternate universe it was definitely memorable look that stands out in my mind.

I just googled it (it was the romulans I didn't like) as I said I only saw the new movies once since I wasn't a huge fan. I didnt like the romulans because they had them as tattoo faced. if they hadn't said they were romulan I would never have thought they were.

Yes I've only been a fan a bit over a year (one because I was never raised in a Trek house hold and two because I'm a quite young Trekkie, 21) So yeah it isn't nostalgia, I think it's that I was just so head over heels with the original series and the changes they DID make I felt weren't necessarily for the better. I did however like Uhura's new personality. I didn't like the new Spock, and I didn't like the new Scotty as much as the original ones, they were just slightly off from the characters in a way that put me off of them. I also didn't like some of the over the top dynamics (parking the ship underwater, crashing the ship into star fleet headquarters, the flying jet suits) I will also say the new Khan did a phenomenal job. He was a very strong actor and perfectly portrayed the betrayal aspect.

Im with you Brie. I don't like them so much. I like the special effects and Karl Urbans portrayal of McCoy and that's about it. So far we have had 2 movies where the enterprise had to go against a bigger and more powerful ship. The enterprise is supposed to be the best in the fleet but yet its been beaten to a pulp for 2 movies. Sheeeesh.

One has now, so there's no problem. But if we want to keep this up this silly line of reasoning, I guess the Romulans in "The Next Generation" are not Romulan either because they had a ridge on their forehead, and never had a ridged Romulan shown up in Trek. Let's not stop there, the Klingons in "The Motion Picture" aren't Klingons because they have ridges well. I guess Chakotay on "Voyager" isn't a human either because no human officer has been shown with a tattoo on Star Trek.

There are theoretically Billions of Romulans. Why couldn't some have tattoos? Humans show a variety of body adornment, why not Romulans? Why limit it to what has been seen before? Break the mold. Show variety. Expand on the idea. Create depth. Aliens do not have to be in the cookie cutter TNG format.

It's ironic, for a series that sometimes gets praised by fans for it's "diversity" within its human crew that it will be criticized for showing any kind of diversity in other species. Every single Romulan should be the exact same. Every single Klingon should be exactly the same, etc. No deviation allowed what so ever.

It's ironic, for a series that sometimes gets praised by fans for it's "diversity" within its human crew that it will criticized for showing any kind of diversity in other species. Every single Romulan should be the exact same. Every single Klingon should be exactly the same, etc.

Which is why I loath the TNG+ Romulans. The hand full of Romulans we saw in TOS showed more variety than all the TNG+ Romulans combined.
