So who did the worst single acting job in the first 10 films.

Can we include extended cuts? Because the extra Peter Preston scene in TWOK is godawful. "Oh gosh, sir, you shouldn't say such mean things about Mr. Scott!" The guy sounded like the Squeaky Voiced Teen from the Simpsons.

latest

I watched TWOK on Netflix the other week after learning that Leonard Nimoy had died. I normally just watch my DVD, but Netflix was a little more convenient at the moment.

When it got to the Engineering inspection scene, I found myself thinking, "Ugh, this better not be the version with the stupid 'blind as a Tiberian bat' line."

Seriously, Preston sucked. Sorry, Scotty, but your nephew is annoying as hell.

Caithlin Dar was fine with me and the least of TFF's problems, really. I got the impression that she used her beauty and feminine wiles to get as far in Romulan politics as she could, but her foolish optomism put her government off, so they were glad to send her off to some loser posting like Paradise City to spin her wheels, knowing she'd go willingly, happily. She got more than she bargained for, that's for sure - a trip to the center of the galaxy and David Warner for a boyfriend. It's too bad, though, that we never got to see what her Secret Pain was - as bubbly as she is and everything ...

I watched TWOK after Leonard's death, and you're right, I think we have a winner. The 'blind as a Tiberian bat' line is utterly cringeworthy, and is delivered really badly, as is most of that scene in the directors cut. It's the only part of the directors cut where I really long for the original scenes instead. The rest of it's fine.

Thanks for pointing that out. Esteban and Morrow's attitude bothered me for a long time.

I never had a problem with Morrow's decision-making or attitude; he seemed to genuinely sympathize with Kirk's plight but also had to consider the big picture because of his position, hence his saying, "I am Commander Starfleet, so I don't break rules." I don't think he was being smug so much as he was being honest.

TWOK would have been very different if Clark Terrell had simply conceded that Ceti Alpha VI was a no-go because of a particle of preanimate matter.

Indeed, though it wasn't entirely Terrell's decision, as Marcus thought it was worth taking a look to see if the lifeforms detected by Reliant's sensors could be moved.

Ike Eisenmann was better in the Witch Mountain movies and the '70s TV series The Fantastic Journey. It was interesting that Scotty had a nephew, but unfortunately the actor wasn't really a good choice in my opinion.

I can't say it's the single worst acting job, but during her close up shot when Kirk and McCoy's sentence gets read in TUC I thought Grace Lee Whitney looked like she was trying to suppress a smile/laughter rather than being devastated.
I know the start of both can look similar, but the idea of Janice Rand being gleeful about Kirk being sent to Rura Pente somehow pleases me...

^ Yeah that's what I was getting at, though technically it was "evil" Kirk who assaulted her, not "real" Kirk.
Still, since evil Kirk was part of real Kirk IRRC, it's understandable how she might bear a grudge.

^She was also there for the transporter accident in TMP--and was watching when the Enterprise limped home in TSFS. Given that so many bad things happened to her when Kirk was around, it's a wonder she didn't break into song and dance when the guilty verdict was read.

Nope. It's not a wonder at all. Rand came out as trying to get real Kirk to show interest in her, in "Miri," which came after "The Enemy Within," in all of stardate order, broadcast order, and production order.

Yep. One could even imagine in his or her head-canon that Rand became interested in the field of transporter operations because of what happened in "The Enemy Within."

Yes every now and then it's nice to just have fun. And it is quite hilarious to imagine Janice Rand and Zulu (because of Takei's dislike of Shatner) leading their crew in an ecstatic, elaborate song and dance number after learning of Kirk's sentence.

Of course nobody is saying that Kirk was responsible for what happened to the two guys in the transporter in TMP, that was a accident.
Likewise is Kirk (evil versions of him notwithstanding) not the type to force himself on women.

I like the fanon of the incident with evil!Kirk spurring Rand's interest in transporter technology witch would also explain where she dissappeared to after Withney left; she transfered to a different assignment that would allow her to further her career in that direction.

I cannot get over Alley Saavik's wrong eyebrows. When someone wants to play a Vulcan, he or she should be able to temporarily sacrifice their real eyebrows, dammit! Nimoy had to shave his eyebrows for years... why it was for Alley such a problem to do it several times?

As for Valeris, she was ok to me. Not typically Vulcan, but we do not know much about her past. She wasnt intended to be likable, and her haircut was weird even for the early 90's, but i found her quite charismatic though.

^I actually didn't have a problem with that, nor did I object when she swore during the Kobyashi Maru simulation. Vulcan or no, it was important for Saavik to cultivate her own identity rather than merely imitating Spock.

It would be ironic if Rand held a grudge against Kirk for the transporter accident only to become a transporter chief only to have two people die horribly on her watch. Made all the more ironic by Kirk's words, "It wasn't your fault."

Unfortunately, when I first saw this thread, the first person who came to mind was Shatner himself in TFF. He obviously has trouble directing himself, as evidenced by his over-the-top performance. Just check out his scene in the brig with Spock and McCoy - he's so hyperactive it's absolutely hilarious.
