Phlox = Guinan 2.0 ???

Guinan shows in Yesterday's Enterprise perception beyond linear time as does Phlox in Twilight. Do they have common ancestors?

It's star trek, everyone has cooler perceptions than humans.

But humans have HUMANITY which trumps all. In your face superpowers!!

Re: Plox = Guinan 2.0 ???

If anything, the writing staff was ripping off Guinan to inform Phlox. But if you're going to steal ... steal from The Best! Guinan is a far superior character to Phlox ... in every conceivable way.

I love Guinan she's awesome. Phlox is awful and annoying. Possibly the worst Trek character.

I'm afraid I don't know what you mean about Phlox. So Phlox discovered the interspatial parasites in "Twilight." The parasites show up on a microcellular scan, such as the one we saw him run on Archer. How exactly does that give Denobulans a perception of non-linear time? Or, is there some other reason, and/or am I missing something?

Dear Doctor is the least of Phlox' problems. His trendy Alternative Medicine approach, for one thing. I mean ... he uses maggots and animal scat to cure people! John Billingsley was also burdened with the sorriest rubber head ever to impose itself on STAR TREK fans - and that's really saying something! The way the character walked and talked was no winner, either. But with Guinan ... we get treated to an Academy Awards® Winner performance. And as a character, Guinan has a thousand years of wisdom behind her eyes. In The Next Generation episode "The Dauphin," even Riker famously felt compelled to flatter her about them.

Wise bartenders dolling out platitudes are boring as crap.

Give me MR TONGUE any day.

'Wise bartenter' is probably an oxymoron. Most bartenders I've ever known were there because they either really liked their job (rare) or because they were backed into their position because some other career aspiration hadn't worked out. But seeing as Guinan lives in a time of no requirement for money, I would say that the uninhibited access to alcohol could be a considerable motivating factor.

When Phlox partially removes the parasites in the future, the scans taken over the past years are also modified and the parasites partially disappeared. Surprisingly, Phlox knows that the original scans were different from (presently) existing ones, so he has the same perception as Guinan that the reality was altered (here through the medical treatment) although he should not have that knowledge.

But T'Pol noticed it too. In fact, wasn't it T'Pol who first noticed the discrepancy that the scans had changed in the past when they destroyed the parasites in the present?

Yes, the change in the old scans was noticable to everyone. Phlox is not related to Guinan.

I think most starships would be better off with a competent (if eccentric) doctor than a cryptic bartender who only appears in 29 episodes of a 178 ep series.

Phlox is awesome.

Yes Phlox is awesome and a relatively well developed new alien species. His walking differently is a good thing, it's not hugely obvious but it's a subtle difference that stands out. Seeing his tongue and toenails gets ridiculed but again, actual alien features. How often do we get to see alien grooming.. they never even showed us the Bolian bowel extravaganzas, they only alluded to them!

I like Phlox's friendship with the human scientist, they both seem quite similar in nature and their friendship is believably warm and informed by their mutual scientific curiosity with their jobs and each other. The Denobulan marriages are also cool, FINALLY something different comes along. Okay this was alluded to again with Bolians but we never saw it. With Phlox we meet one of his wives and hear the natter about varying spouses.

Phlox is witty, urbane and after a time more invested in this interesting new space faring species than I suspect he thought he would be. It works. He likes Chinese food. He loves animals both as medicine and pets. He's a good man and he's not human.

blah blah.. one of my favorite ENT characters.

Also they waited until almost the end of the series to show us his alarm reflex!

Aha, so the whole crew got (in the expanse) the "beyond linear time perception"? Did they deliver any explanation of this happening?

Not that I recall, but I think it's pretty clear that it was a by-product of the way the parasites operated. The parasites were responsible.

In DS9 "Accession," literally everyone was aware that The Call of the Prophets was an unfinished poem that was completed by Akorem after he went back in time. Ben ascribed peoples' awareness of that to the Prophets working in mysterious ways, which is just fine, except that it establishes precedent in the Star Trek universe for anyone to attain this sort of awareness under the right circumstances.

That's my take on it.

There's nothing to explain because there's a giant reset button at the end of the episode.
