It occurs to me that the death of Spock at the end of Wrath of Khan was probably my first real experience with the idea of mortality when I was a child. [edit] At least the idea that the "Good Guy" could die.
Leonard Nimoy in playing Spock, exposed to me the first true secular wise character that i saw on TV. Nimoy's Spock character's wisdom was based on logic rather than on religion. I still remember Spock's quote to Valeris from The Undiscovered Country. "Logic, logic, logic. Logic is the beginning of wisdom, Valeris, not the end". May he find peace.
I woke this morning to many text messages on my phone telling me about Nimoy, and I had gone to sleep the night before right after posting in the RIP Maurice Hurley thread. I quickly got up, checked the boards, posted a quick reply in the legacy thread, listened to Kirk's Death (Generations), had a BIG sob and went to work. As I walked into work (I work at a very local Café) the barista just walked up and hugged me saying no words (at that point I completely lost it), and all day I had regular customers coming in and giving condolences. I felt as though I shared Nimoy's death with the local community, and it's strange, I have always attributed the practical future of humanity as depicted in Star Trek to a strong sense community amongst people, working together etc, and the suburb I live and work in has the strongest sense of (secular) community I have ever experienced. Sorry for the stream of consciousness there, it's been a teary day. RIP Leonard Nimoy

I didn't read all the replies here, (because I'm lazy) so I don't know if anyone else has done this. But today, I decided to watch "Unification, Part II" in remembrance of this great man. I did so because TOS is boring, (sorry, original series fans, I just like TNG better) Spock was only in two episodes of TNG, and "Unification, Part I" didn't really count because he was in it for only a few seconds. So when I watched Part II, I saw the death of a fictional character, who was the father of the fictional character portrayed by the man who died the day I saw the episode, which was made to honor the death of the man who created Star Trek itself! You can imagine that this was a special and sentimental moment for me. So, please acknowledge me if anyone else did the same thing, and please throw all your hate at me if you love TOS (it's inevitable). Well, all I can say is, it's too bad that Old Spock won't be there anymore to bail out Chris Pine and his merry band of spacemen when they get into all sorts of trouble.
It is a far far better thing I do than I have ever done before... A far better place I go than I have ever known
Nice pics guys... Feel as though I've lost a close family member, I was shocked at how much it affected me. That character really shaped me as a child. I still remember when all the other kids were running around playing at school, I was that one kid walking around with my hands clasped logically behind my back, just like Spock. When I remembered this today, my reaction was no longer a mystery. Bye, Mr Nimoy.
I've been impressed by the TV coverage of Mr.Nimoy's death. Not your usual "beam me up"type of sniggering that accompanies any Trek story.
