So it seems to me the command crew must of known they would be assigned a Constitution class ship. I certainly doubt they would be assigned to the Excelsior without prior training. Her systems were all new and experimental.

Maybe they were being taken to see the ship in order to begin their training.

It's possible Kirk's expression could be taken either way.

It looks like a yearning in Kirk's eyes to me, though Shatner was probably reacting to a guy holding a stick with a white ball on it.

Well to go even one better in the Star Wars prequels they didn't even use any real actors for the characters.

At the end of ST4 - TVH, the crew seems to not know what kind of ship they're being assigned to. How likely would that be? I know that US Naval Crews are trained to crew the vessels they're assigned to. Wouldn't that be likely in Star Fleet? In fact I think they show this at the start of TWOK. I suspect that there is a high level of standardisation amongest Starfleet vessels. Witness the Miranda Class bridge vs the Constitution Class bridge, they were almost identical.

I agree. It was a real pain in the ass to try and watch all that eye candy AND try to follow the "plot". Hopefully Disney has learned and just goes full bore on the visuals and doesn't worry about the story.

I suspect that there is a high level of standardisation amongest Starfleet vessels. Witness the Miranda Class bridge vs the Constitution Class bridge, they were almost identical.

Then again, bridges are separate modules, designed to be easily swapped out and replaced. So two ships of the same class may have totally different bridge designs (and the reverse).
