My Gripes with STID!

I'm referring to the real Khan Noonian Singh, of course.

I mean, there has to be some important standard by which we're judging resemblances, right? I'm going with the real Khan, who's portrayed in TOS and nuTrek with all the accuracy one would expect of Hollywood.

Cumberbatch's portrayal of Khan is easily as authentic as his portrayal of Turing.

Ah. So, you're saying:

George C. Scott/Kirk Douglas on screen in costume:General George S. Patton::Ricardo Montalban/Benedict Cumberbatch on screen in costume:Khan Noonian Singh, thus fuzzily defining "the real Khan" as an unknown element in a set of possible extrapolations.

They completely f'd up Khan in this movie. Cumberbatch was poorly casted. There was no resemblence to Khan.

Why would there be?

Nothing in the timeline changes would have changed Khan, and messing with Khan was messing with a favorite ST villain. It was lame how different Cumberbatch was from the first actor who played Khan. Cumberbatch could have been f-ing anyone.

Anything in the timeline could have changed Khan, that's the point. No one recognized him, which points heavily to the notion that he was surgically altered.

While it would have been awesome to see a real Sikh play Khan for a change, I'm a huge Cumberbatch fan, so I felt if they were going that route, pick the best, and I think they did, under the circumstances.

Okay, sure. He could have been surgically altered, etc., etc. But, he should not have been. Khan was a formula that did not need to be messed with. It would be like giving spock blonde hair and human ears. Why would you mess with the original formula that people liked so much?

What is the Khan formula? To me its Genetically engineered superman from the 20th Century who is a dangerous foe.

Meh. I had to squint to notice a resemblance between any of the characters and their TOS counterparts. Kirk's eyes were the wrong color, for crying out loud! McCoy's hair was parted on the wrong side. That didn't sound like Scotty to me, the accent was wrong. Pike looked older than he should've been. And let's not even get started on Chekov. ;)

I thought Cumberbatch was very good, and it was neat to actually see an actor cast in a Trek movie who was on the verge of breaking out as a major motion picture star.

It's just both crews trying to get the best of one another, drunk on cheap wine, for two hours.

Maybe Romulan Ale comes from a special kind of grape?

A sapphire blue grape grown in a secret valley no one but the alemakers dare enter. :shifty:

That has no credibility for me whatsoever, and if it were ever said on screen that's where Romulan ale comes from, it would ruin the movie for me. Ale from grapes? Really! ( :p )

Cumberbatch was way off the mark. At least most of the others tried to fit the mold.

There is no Khan formula, other than the one that rapidly heals the body. :ouch:

Seriously, though, there is no formula. Khan's only real description in the original series was that he was a Sikh. They used Mexican born Ricardo Montalban as the actor to play a Sikh, who is generally presumed to be Indian. In those days, dark skin meant playing everyone other than the white guy. There was no formula.

So? There was no resemblance to Jeffrey Hunter's Christopher Pike with Bruce Greenwood playing him, and that was fine.

It was lame how different Cumberbatch was from the first actor who played Khan.

You mean how TWOK Khan was a one-dimensional thinker who risked his own freedom and that of his followers just to get some silly revenge on Kirk that cost him his life and the life of said followers? Instead of STID Khan who cared about his followers and would do anything to save them? Yeah, that's pretty lame all right.

I wasn't talking about the writing/storyline. I was talking about casting. Still, I can't believe you're dissing WOK...
