Writers You Would Like to See Write Doctor Who

Allyn Gibson

This weekend I was at Farpoint in Baltimore, Maryland. On Sunday, I attended Timothy Zahn's talk, and Zahn fielded a number of questions about his Star Wars and Honorverse work. Toward the end of the session, he was asked about a franchise he would like to write for that he hasn't had the opportunity to.

"Doctor Who," he said. He didn't have to stop to think. And he wasn't just saying that. He was clearly a Whovian; he pulled a sonic screwdriver and "zapped" me Friday night when I asked him to autograph some books for me. (I was wearing a Doctor Who lanyard with a TARDIS dangler, and he was having fun.)

I have to say. Until yesterday afternoon, I never knew I wanted a Timothy Zahn Doctor Who novel. Now I desperately want a Timothy Zahn Doctor Who novel.

This got me to thinking. What other writers would I like to see tackle Doctor Who?

Besides Zahn, I'd love to read a War Doctor/Time War novel written by David Mack (Star Trek: Destiny, Star Trek: Vanguard). Or a Bernard Cornwell Doctor Who novel.

And, I want to watch an episode written by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies).

So, I want to throw this out to the rest of you. What writers would you like to see write Doctor Who -- television, prose, comics -- that haven't yet written Doctor Who?

TV
Joss Whedon would seem a bit of natural fit.

Books
Peter David could knock it out of the park.

I would love to see what timey-wimey magic Christopher L. Bennett could pull off given his Star Trek: DTI work.

I might get slaughtered for this but given how much fun The Wrong Mans was I'd be interested to see a script by James Corden and Mathew Baynton.

Also Joe Ahearne, though I know it's unlikely he'd return to Who.

Alan Moore. J. Michael Straczynski. Andy Diggle. Dan Simmons. Whedon, already mentioned. Ursula LeGuin. Harlan Ellison.

TV
Joss Whedon would seem a bit of natural fit.

It would have been appropriate during the 2005 - 2010 era, as Davies was so, so desperately trying to ape Buffy.

I'd like to see Zack Stentz take a crack at a Who episode.

I think he's somewhat overrated as a writer but I'd nonetheless like to see what China Mieville would come up with for Doctor Who.

On the timey-wimey front I'd like to see some of the people behind Continuum do an episode!

Being pedantic, Moore's never written for the Doctor. Cybermen, Autons, Sontarans, Rassilon, but not the Doctor himself... Very good stories though!
