Star Trek Amish?

For all we know, the Halkans from "Mirror, Mirror" may very well have been a sort of 'Amish IN SPACE'.

The Baku are probably the most immediate and closest analogy.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this subject, but does anyone else wonder if there would be Amish people in the Star Trek universe? After watching that one TNG episode with the Irish farmers being relocated to the clone planet for sexytimes, I got this weird image in my head of Amish buggies being driven out of the back of landed shuttlecraft; The Alpha Centauri Pennsylvania Dutch.

Those farmers weren't Amish though, they had no issue with using or having advanced technology.

There's a DS9 episode called Paradise with people without technology, by choice.

Well, by one person's choice. They decided to keep living on the planet at the end, but I bet they at least used medical technology when somebody was sick.

Of course, ironically their leader used technology to set up a dampening field to prevent other technology from working.

^ Weren't the people in that episode basically tricked into living in a non-technological state?

:)

Looking at this subject through the other end of the telescope, I wonder what the real Amish would think of Star Trek. I'm afraid most of them aren't even aware of the show and are just doing without.

I think Amish are supposed to know nothing and I mean nothing about anything requiring even a little bit of technology. So even if they learned by accident of star-trek it would be as opaque to them as a light bulb or a coffee machine.

No, the Ba'ku weren't Amish, they were just stupid

Peaceniks, won't commit acts of violence themselves. But perfectly willing to have one of their women seduce a guy with access to powerful weapons who will then fight for them.

:)

Yes, but they later consented to it. It's basically the same argument as when parents tell their child: "You'll thank me later."

Yeah, but like I said, I bet next time somebody was mortally ill they used technology to cure them.
Unless they decided to leave the dampener on as the guy said they might, in the end of the episode.

And thus, why women are more dangerous than men. You'll never see them coming, until it's too late. ;)

Talk about stereotypes!

Stereotypes are yesterday's news. I want to see surroundsoundtypes.
