NASA's New Robot Will Take the Plunge ... Into a Volcano

VolcanoBot 2, and its predecessor VolcanoBot 1, are designed to fit inside crevices in volcanoes that are too small or too dangerous for humans to explore. The robots are the brainchild of Carolyn Parcheta, a volcanist and NASA postdoctoral fellow based at JPL.

I wonder if they will find new forms of life in those volcano tubes? I mean the bottom of the ocean was thought to be lifeless but it is teeming with life. Does the same hold true for the volcano tubes?
Perhaps exploration of the volcano tubes here on Earth might yield some form of theory to the possibility of life existing deep within Mars where it might still be warm.

NASA might even find the Ark of the Covenant in one of those lava tubes as well as other treasures long thought lost.

I hope they can find my car keys before I have to leave for work in the morning.

No, I think the Ark of the Covenant is probably in the Money Pit.

I think they'll find Al Gore was wrong and that just below the surface of the Earth it's not incredibly hot at "several million degrees".

Perhaps they will find the Holy Grail. Didn't it fall into the abyss towards the end of III? Speaking of abysses, I wonder if there is a course somewhere on Drysonian Mechanics?

What could they find? It should be obvious, really.

I still think someone should have given Lidenbrock the Voynich manuscript instead. It would have saved him and Axel much headaches, and the Volcano Bot would have had a clear first, with no crazy German professors standing before it. It's a shame enough that NASA had to follow in the footsteps of crazy gun-making rivals with the Apollo program, even stealing the basic plot with that Cold War rivalry thing.

On the flip side, probably everyone in the house would have starved to death. At best. There's no telling what would have happened if they deciphered the manuscript. Lidenbrock attempting to fly the Andorian starship crashed in Central America would have been one big disaster.

Well played, sir.:rommie:

Honest question, Dryson - do you really believe this could happen?

You never know. There have always been secret and ancient societies that know more about the Earth and its secret locations. A person possessing the Ark of the Covenant would have great power but would attract a lot of enemies.

A person who thinks they might know the location of the Ark of Covenant would have nearly double the power of the person who actually had the Ark but would not have to deal with the hundreds of millions trying to take it from them...but could make hundreds of millions from the adventure of looking for the Ark.

Please remember that many of us are laymen. Personally, I fail to grasp the science of your posts.

Hold your horses there, Dan Brown.
I've watched Raiders of the Lost Ark, too. But I'm well aware of the fact that this is the science forum, not the science fiction forum.
Please try and keep that in mind from now on or I'll have to throw some poisoned dates into this thread.

For now I've saved you.
