He might be just referring to the early 2000s. Claremont returned to the franchise after nearly a decade, but for the most part his return was poorly received and he instead got a spin-off title, "X-treme X-men" which was a team led by Storm that was not tied to the mansion. It was OK but not quite up to his classic Uncanny run.
Of course after he left Uncanny there was the even more poorly received stuff by Joe Casey and Chuck Austen, so they invited him back for a while when they brought the bright costumes back.
He also of course recently did the X-men Forever title which was kind of a continuation of his original storyline that was dropped when he left (Due I'm told to problems with Jim Lee) but that didn't really last long either.

I haven't read any of it but wasn't his Nightcrawler ongoing getting pretty good WOM?
I know it, like a lot of things are getting cancelled with Secret Wars coming up but thought it had been well received overall. Don't know what the sales were like and if it would've been cancelled regardless of SWars or not.

I didn't read Nightcrawler...
ASM #14. Spider-Verse Finale. Much like the Superior SPM Finale, it was good but nothing spectacular. I think it's a little convenient that not a single Spider died in this big final battle after they'd been dropping left and right before this. I was also expecting some big reveal about the Master Weaver that never happened. And I thought the villains were defeated way too easily.

I completely forgot that it was new comics day.
Fist, unless you have a best friend with all the X-Men and a generous lending policy, the most cost efficient method of reading 15 pounds of X-Men comics is a subscription to Marvel's digitalbase... So doesn't that really mean that you can start up where you left off 12 years ago, and every time it starts to get shitty, you can just skip ahead 10 issues and pick up again?

Yeah, I'm not going to read 30 year old comics. I've tried, and I'm not going to say they're bad, but it is an awful experience for me.

Although the Essential Volumes are superbly user friendly.
Essential X-Men is up to Uncanny #280 (and maybe a few annuals after that.) but google is telling me that Marvel is no longer interested in making new essentials or reprinting old essentials. My guess is that essentials were seen as an unnecessary competition for the digital database.
If you do buy a few of these, when you're finished with them, hand them off for Christmas and tell your niece that they're colouring in books.
