Gotham - Season 1

Ah, those commercials...."Let's get some Very Conspicuous Product Placement out of the way so I can take you behind the scenes of Gotham."

Well, it's better than having a scene in the actual show where the characters take a break from the action to talk to each other about how awesome their car is.

My favorite in show product placement was Subway in Chuck. The got Subway sandwiches for lunch and discussed how great the Subway sandwiches were.

I totally agree. If it get's me some behind the scenes tidbits and avoids product placements within the show then I'm all for it. How many times did we hear Chloe say she was going somewhere in her Prius on Smallville? That was really annoying.

Maroni and Falcone at this point I think are the most interesting characters on the show, Gordon is a rather flawless character and Bruce is pretty boring. But this show is more about the gangsters than the heroes at this point. And I do like Robin Lord Taylor's commericals, he comes across as a fairly likable buy and pretty normal by comparison to his character. I can't say I like what they're doing to Ed Nygma though, the Riddler was always more a petty criminal not the psycho his turning into here.

I actually like Bruce's arc -- right now he's a smart but very naive kid...these events will make him STREET wise, and a better crime fighter.

Robin Lord Taylor is good as Penguin, though his arc seems to go super fast.

With Nygma, i like his current job...it will give more credence to how he can avoid police as a criminal (he knows what they look for).

And with him connecting with Penguin... that will be interesting.

Honestly, the Riddler has been all over the place over the decades. He's been a mastermind, a buffoon, a psycho killer, a consulting detective, and even an evil occultist at various points over the last forty years or so. And he certainly seemed manic enough when played by Gorshin or Carrey onscreen.

Given that GOTHAM aims for a dark, noirish tone, it makes sense that their version of the Riddler would tend to the creepy-crazy side . . .

OKay... CHRISTINE put the body parts in the medical examiners locker because she didn't want Ed to get kicked out of the office.

Maybe she's sweet on Eddie right back, or maybe she just really doesn't like bullies?

She's still not interested in reciprocating his sentiments, but it's nice to have someone positive about your existence in orbit.

Except Nygma was the one who picked the locks

Yeah, Dr.Tompkins seems to be in the "safe" column given her role in Bruce's future.
If they killed her it would be the biggest step towards Gotham being an Elseworlds show vs just the sideways interpretation it is now what with all the foes showing up already, pre-Batman.

So which one, Enigma or Kringle kills Dr. Tompkins? It has to be one of them, right.

give her roll in later Batman lore I think Dr Tompkins is probably safe.

but who's heard of a Ms Kringle in the comics?
Her name alone (Ms. Kringle, Kris Kringle; I think her actual name is Kristen, too), plus the actress playing her, suggests she's someone significant. Somehow, anyway. I just have no clue how or why.

Related to Mr. Freeze somehow? I just don't know.

Belaboring the point . . .

Just by coincidence, I finally got around to reading the recent "Year Zero" graphic novel, in which the Riddler is reinvented as a diabolical mastermind who is responsible for umpteen deaths and comes very close to killing everyone in Gotham City . . . on purpose.

So, yeah, the Riddler ain't a petty criminal anymore.

This series is pretty painting all of Batman's enemies as psychopaths though Nygma, Cobblepot, Dent and even Poison Ivy are all cracked in some way. Even Gorshin played his Riddler with a bit more complexity than that. It'd be nice to have some variety on the show rather seeing Batman's rogue of villains all decending to some kind of madness.

Well, there should be a reason that they all get locked in an asylum rather than a prison....

That said, I don't put much stock in comics creative team #1,483 overcompensating for an old villain's shortcomings by reinventing him as uber-kewl/badass. That's all fine and dandy in whatever passes for the current continuity, but there's a difference between a character's continuity and their history.

That's the thing, though... they haven't generally all been locked in Arkham. The mentally ill ones like the Joker and Two-Face are kept there, but the ones who are just criminals, like Catwoman or the Penguin, are locked up in Blackgate Penitentiary (or Stonegate, as it was called in B:TAS). Generally I'd say the Riddler is more of a Blackgate candidate. The only mental disorder I've ever known him to be depicted with is his obsessive-compulsive need to leave clues to his crimes, even when he tries not to.

The "Year Zero" storyline is actually pretty well done. At one point, the Riddler takes the entire city hostage and refuses to release it until someone asks him a riddle even he can't answer.

I could see them doing something like that on GOTHAM.
