"Agent Carter" season one discussion and spoilers

I don't recall his name being mentioned, so I had fun imaging he was J Jonah's father. He did remind me of JK Simmons, just a bit.

Too bad the Sony deal would probably block making a Jamison connection possible.

Definitely the best episode to date.

Poolside was great as always. Dugan is such a fun character. I hope to see a lot more of him if they turn this into a series.

I missed the credits (or at least wasn't paying attention), so Glover was a bit of a surprise. I cheered a little.

By the way, I finally found a solution to my problems with ABC (or my local station, or somebody) airing a weird audio mix with the background ambience almost overwhelming the dialogue -- which was an increasingly frequent problem on Agents of SHIELD this season and has been a constant problem with Carter. Namely, don't watch it on ABC! I recently signed up with Hulu Plus for other reasons, and this morning I decided to see how the sound was on their rebroadcast of last night's episode, and the sound mix was fine. So I guess from now on I'll be watching the show on Wednesdays instead of Tuesday nights.

I think I'll do the same for The Flash and Arrow, since I can't get them on an HD/letterboxed channel and I don't have a widescreen TV, so I never get to see the full widescreen picture.

Honestly, at this point I'm starting to wonder if I should give up cable altogether, given that it's a lot more expensive than online video services. Although I don't yet have viable online alternatives for everything I watch.

I've been exclusively Hulu Plus, Netflix streaming and Amazon Prime for years, and with the exception of local news and sports, I haven't missed broadcast or cable at all.

Hulu Plus bonus during election season-- no campaign commercials! That's worth the subscription fee right there.

On the other hand, the annoying thing about Hulu is seeing the same damn commercials over and over again in every episode. At least with Plus, they're shorter and fewer.

I'm wondering if the money I could save by not paying for cable every month would let me afford one of those new TVs that can get Netflix and Hulu and stuff. How do those work, anyway? Do they use wifi, and is it with their own routers or do they use your existing system? And how much Internet access do they have? (I'm thinking of Nickelodeon's website video player, which doesn't work well on my laptop.)

Are most shows available for purchase on Amazon Prime or iTunes these days? And how promptly are they available after broadcast? Given that I'm not that heavy a TV watcher, maybe paying for a couple of episodes a week would be cheaper than paying for cable. It's always frustrated me that I have to pay for hundreds of channels when I only watch a few of them.

Probably the best episode yet. The Black Widow connection was a bit of a surprise, but a welcome one. Indeed, if they go the route of the comics and have Romanov be much older than she appears due to some super-serum shenanigans, then that might actually have been her who stabbed Dum-Dum.

Not sure what the deal is with Dotty (aside from clearly being damaged in the worst way) but her actions seem to be hinting that her mission is to somehow take Peggy's place...or maybe she just has a weird method of getting into her subject's head?

The Winter Soldier already stated that Natasha was born in 1984, it's hard to imagine them contradicting the movie's contiinuity.

A smart tv should have both an Ethernet port for a wired to router connection, and WiFi for connecting wirelessly. You would run an Ethernet cable from the router to the tv if it's located in the same room. Smart TVs will have SmartHubs where you select apps to load. The most popular services, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon and Vudu will be easily found if they aren't preloaded already.

If the HDTV advertises having a web browser, don't get excited- you won't be able to use it to watch video based websites...manufacturers seem to be under an edict not to allow full video playback capability on those browsers.

Smart TVs created by Armin Zola and the Hydra Corporation of America. :techman:

Maybe he meant that she born inside the book?

Although I think it was first published in 1949, so that hardly helps.

I'd actually forgotten that detail. Of course just because it's stated, doesn't mean it's true. Zola's information could have been wrong. After all, he was on the SHIELD end of Hydra, not Leviathan and 1984 could just have been her cover DoB.

That said, it probably is actually 1984 as I'd honestly be surprised if they end up having both Rogers and Romanov being relics of the 40's, especially if SLJ gets his way and Fury ends up having fought in WWII as well.

Seems a bit odd though that the Black Widow program could have gone on for 40 years...

Sigh. No Agent Carter on On Demand yesterday. Hopefully it will show up today.

I got it on demand last night, thankfully with no train wreck interruptions.

Enjoyed the hell out of it. The only thing that bothered me were the CGI bullet-hit sparks all around everybody in the big gun battle. BOY did they look fake! No budget for squibs?

I kind of liked my theory (well, of course I did) that Hydra infiltrated both SHIELD and the KGB and played them off each other like SPECTRE. It helped explain the star on the Winter Soldier's arm. Leviathan does somewhat undercut that.

I think your theory is still fine. I think as an evil organization, like HYDRA, isn't above setting up competing compartments and even allowing them to fight amoungst themselves to get the best of either, or to eliminate a "problem" commander and some dead wood. There was a Garret HYDRA, a Whitehall HYDRA, an Alexander Pierce HYDRA, and there's a Strucker HYDRA still out there, plus who know's what else. I wonder if they are ever going to mention A.I.M. again, they were originally part of HYDRA in the comics but broke away and acted independently, sometimes against HYDRA.

And I think the star is there because Winter Soldier is Soviet equipment. I'm assuming there was still a Cold War in the MCU history, just because HYDRA was arrainging it to happen doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Dum Dum is great, I hope he's back again.

I have no problem with the Scarlett Johanssen (sp?) Black Widow being younger than me if there was another Black Widow or several that strech back through the continuity like there are at least five Captain Americas. I would like that. But it could also be revealed that she really is older chronologically but frozen from a previous time, good for me, too. I know some people have balked at her working for the KGB and being born in 1984, only seven years before the USSR collapsed, but as this program shows, and Widow's comment about the girl that lures Banner to the house, they start quite young. I like the idea of "Legacy" characters, though. So there could be multiple Black Widows. There seems to be an "old" Ant Man and a new one coming up in the movie.
And as I mentioned in the begining of this thread, Edwin Jarvis really did exist in the MCU, rather than just using his name as a computer voice as a nod to the comics.

The Winter Soldier already stated that Natasha was born in 1984, it's hard to imagine them contradicting the movie's contiinuity.

See above. Plus, it's not as if a dead evil scientist downloaded onto magnetic tape would lie, right?

They're using Agent Carter to make it clear that the Red Room/Black Widow program was in place from at least the mid-1930's. Thanks to either Stalin or the Leviathan organization, but the result's the same either way.

Didn't know that Jackson's been lobbying for his version of Fury to match Fury-1610 in terms of age.

I don't think Luke Cage ever really had a secret identity -- he used a code name for a while, but that was just for show, and he was in it for the money, so I assume he'd want people to know what name to write on their checks. As for Iron Fist, he wears a mask, so I guess he has a secret identity, but I don't know the character well enough to be sure.
Luke started out as "Luke Cage, Hero for Hire" and then stole the "Power Man" moniker from the villainous Power Man, which resulted in a comical fist fight over the name. He came up with idea after beating some villain up, saying something like, "That's BLACK power, man! Hey, "Power Man!" I like that!"

I remember Danny sitting having tea with Shang Chi one time, and Shang Chi says he is obviously a great master, but what's up with the mask? I forget what Danny's excuse was.

Danny Rand is the son a millionaire industrialist, I'm not sure his identity as Iron Fist was publically known for a while. So it was a sort of Batman/Brcue Wayne kind of deal.
