The Flash - Season 1

Yay, Malese Jow! She was my favorite part of Star-Crossed. I guess they're ignoring the bits from the original Arrow episode and the series pilot that showed a Linda Park reporting on the accelerator activation (and played by a different actress) -- unless it turns out she only transferred to the sports desk within the past ten months.

A pretty good episode all around. I loved the rescue at the beginning, with the rescuees recognizing and thanking the Flash. It's starting to feel more like a real superhero series, without all that skulking about in secret.

And it was nice to see Barry and Caitlin bonding, though it'll be kind of melodramatic if she's starting to fall for Barry just when he meets another love interest in Linda. But man, did Danielle Panabaker look gorgeous this week.

I like the idea of a line-of-sight teleporter carrying a pocket telescope around to scout out her targets. Although they kind of cheated with a lot of her jumps, like having her jump from the armored car back into her own car while it was behind her, without even glancing back. (Unless she still retained the entanglement from jumping in from it before.) Also, when she teleported Clay out of his cell, how did she get them from a standing position to a sitting position inside the car?

There was a throwaway line about Clay's residual DNA taking on Peekaboo's properties when they jumped together. Was that a setup for Clay getting teleportation powers of his own later on?

Ok, previously they said "man of steel"...tonight, "faster than a speeding bullet". Yet "cub reporter" is not a reference to Superman mythos?

Of course not, because it's been the generic term for a trainee reporter since the 1890s. It's no more unique to Jimmy Olsen than "butler" is unique to Alfred.

I totally dug the chemistry between Barry and Caitlin when they were together at the bar. I think they would make a nice, cute couple under different circumstances.

Why couldn't Barry just tell his father his real identity? Not that it makes a difference, since the elder Mr. Allen already has it figured out.

Peekaboo's teleportation power was limited in that she could only port to where she could see. She wasn't really much of a threat.

You would think Cisco would've been more careful letting Piper out of his cage. Now they have to catch the genius sociopath again.

I see they've made Linda Park around the same age as Barry.

I am wondering if they are going to just have it that this really is another reporter with the same name, Linda Park? Similar to what they did with Cat Grant on Smallville. Not a recast. Given the change from tv news to a newspaper. You would think Barry would know her. Not a big deal either way.

Oh, I hadn't realized it was a newspaper! I mean, it's called Picture News, so I assumed it was a TV broadcast. But yeah, silly me, they did show that newspaper with Iris's picture of the Flash on the front page. I didn't think through the implications of that.

I'm pissed they still haven't cast Linda Park (from Enterprise) as Linda Park.

Maybe Linda is holding out for the Flash movie in 2018?

The interesting thing is that has always been the name of the newspaper Iris worked for in the comics. Going back to the 1960s. But I have always thought it sounded like a tv show. I assumed they would go that route to modernize her job and differentiate her from Lois Lane.

I have been rewatching episodes of the 1990 series and was surprised to see a copy of the Central City Picture News in one episode. I never noticed that before. Iris West was written out after the Pilot and was not a reporter. They almost always had the local paper used in the series be called the Central City Daily Star.

Which is interesting, since Daily Star was the original name of the paper where Clark Kent and Lois Lane worked. It was changed to Planet by the daily newspaper comic strip, since there were real papers named Daily Star, and other papers that carried the strip didn't want to promote their competition. And the comics and other versions followed suit.

Drunk Caitlin is awesome  Thought they were going to go down a possible romantic route between her n Flash during those scenes.

Caitlin did give Barry some looks that suggested she might be starting to develop feelings for him. She certainly said a number of things, both drunk and sober, that could be seen as hinting at the possibility.

I don't think there's any evidence whatsoever to suggest that the writers have any intention of turning Caitlin into a villain at any point, particularly since they've already gone the 'ally is a villain' route with Harrison Wells/Reverse Flash.

One thing... Yeah, this has probably been discussed before, but...

So, Dr. Wells and the gang are holding all these captured meta-humans in some sort of a hi-tech futuristic Gitmo, and not only is it without any kind of due process, but no one on the outside even knows they're there?

On how many levels does that shit sound wrong to you?

Well, the actually authorities don't even KNOW they're still there. The suspects just disappeared or were assumed killed. Heck, does Joe even know?

And obviously if Piper was in regular jail then Cisco wouldn't have been able to pop him out the following week. THAT's the only reason he was there, aside from some possible notion that they wanted to keep evil that was from "in the family" close to home.

I liked the episode this week, which (among things) reminded me that Grant Gustin was on Glee for several episodes a while back. While I again was pulled out of the story by wondering how a guy who can catch a bullet AS IT WAS IMPACTING HIM wasn't fast enough to grab a teleporter while she was smacking him with a much slower baton, the overall plot and conflict resolution was fun. I was wondering why he didn't just tie a blindfold about her eyes and then restrain her.

Oh, and awesome mostly-voice actor Scott McNeil played the guy who beat up papa Allen and who was liberated for his troubles. Great guy, always nice to see him do live action stuff too.

The most likely reason is that he knew the STAR Labs gang were working with the Flash and thus he'd be able to out them (so to speak) and probably expose Barry's identity in the process.

Not that I approve of that. It's understandable that the Pipeline would be a necessary evil for containing criminals that the conventional prison system can't possibly handle -- although I would like to see Wells and his team working with the CCPD to upgrade legitimate prison facilities for metahuman containment, as well as finding ways to control metahumans' powers while in court or in transit. But in this case, confining a non-metahuman just to protect their own secrets, it's a lot less morally justifiable.

Oh, wow, I didn't recognize him. Wolverine in the Flash universe!

Aside from Detective West...no duly constituted law enforcement personnel, nor officers of the courts, know of the Pipeline. Yet.

Considering what we're now expecting Wells' role to become, I think the Pipeline is a ticking plotline-bomb deliberately set up by the writing staff of the series. The only question remaining for me is "when will it go off?"

As for why would that happen?

Wells wants Barry to not just be a competent hero...but a Legend.

Agreed.

The teleporter chick doesn't even seem that EVIL to me, just someone who screwed up because she was in love with a scumbag.

And yet they locked her up in a tiny cage indefinitely. That's friggin' disturbing.
