Star Trek 3 news/rumours/casting thread

I'd like to see a Southern woman as Mrs. McCoy. One of those mean spirited ones who are sickly sweet and venomous in the same breath. Not sure who could play that.

When I read Shadows on the Sun last week, which features Jocelyn McCoy Treadway, I pictured her being played by Dixie Carter. The description of her was that she was dark haired, very attractive, slim and vivacious and from an upper class small town in Georgia. That seemed like perfect casting for that version of the character, but I expect that the new movie will take their own spin on the character, and it may well be a whole new character as Jocelyn's name and personality isn't "canon".
I'm really excited about this news. A focus on McCoy and three prominent female characters all sound like the movie going in the right direction. I had hoped for one of the female Dax of the era as McCoy's love interest, but his ex is a really interesting character to explore.

Just off the top of my head, if the role is meaty enough, how about Reese Witherspoon? She'll be 39 soon, so the age is right.

Pardon the double post.

Unfortunately, if you didn't already know (and I'm not sure by the wording of your post), Dixie Carter died in 2010.

Holly Hunter is a Georgia girl who could fill the bill, but she may not be the right age at almost 57.

Whoever is chosen, I hope it's someone who can stand toe-to-toe with McCoy and maybe even intimidate (or at least impress) Kirk and Spock. McCoy's ex needs to be a memorable character.

So, which Star Trek bad guy could Bryan Cranston be? Yes, I know it may not be Cranston, and he could be an original character. But let's have some fun and try to cast him as a TOS (series or movie) villain.

Garth of Izar was the first person to come to my mind. A really dark and troubled Garth of Izar.

Interesting choice. Yeah, I'm sure Cranston would do wonders with the role, but given STID already did the renegade Starfleet officers thing, probably not a good idea to go back to that well again so soon.

nuSoran. Looking for the nuNexus. Finds it. Enter Shatner stage right! :bolian:

On edit: a Cranston-esque Soran would be more interesting than the Malcolm McDowell one. The latter was passively creepy. The former, well....

I'd rather Renee Zellweger. I can imagine her and Karl getting cuddly.

AHEM

I was already stoked about Star Trek 3, but if Bryan "I'm the one who knocks" Cranston is being talked to, then July 2016 can't get here soon enough! I also agree that Jessica Chastain would make a good Starfleet captain. Two names that popped into my head for McCoy's ex-wife are his Dredd co-star Lena Headey, or perhaps Reese Witherspoon (I picture Bones, being a southern gentleman, also went for a southern lady to marry)

:p

We're going to have a villain again? That would be fifth film in a row with a villain, seventh if we're counting the Borg Queen. Come on, now, I am sure we can do better than that.

I like Bryan Cranston. Loved him since Malcolm in the Middle. The guy's a 21st Century Jack Lemmon. I imagine they want him to provide the antagonism, because he's a hot property and inherently likeable, even doing deeply questionable things.

Perhaps he could play a Vulcan. A more than a little obnoxious Enterprise-style one. One redeeming aspect to his character that perhaps excuses his behaviour, in the way it really doesn't with Nero or Marcus/"Harrison".

Probably not. I can't imagine the suits approving TMP or TVH these days. Even with TSFS and TFF, they would insist on beefing up the role of the Klingon antagonists. One possibility for ST3, which I've suggested before, is they could get embroiled in dangerous alien politics - it worked in TUC.

Starring Bryan Cranston as Heisenborg
Aaron Paul as Lt. Jesse "Live Long and Prosper, BITCH!" Pinkman

Nailed it.

President of the United Federation of Planets never played an important role in star trek movies. She could appear in small scenes. The same applies to McCoy's ex-wife.
Winona Ryder and Jennifer Morrison had small roles, but they were important to the plot.
But I believe that female captain could have a very important role in the plot. Someone who can help Kirk to face the villain.
I thought it is even interesting. :techman:

I did know that Dixie Carter had died. Maybe I should've mentioned that. I wasn't suggesting she play the role, as I expect she'd have been a lot older than we'd expect McCoy's wife to be now. I just thought it was an interesting observation. If nothing else the physical description of her from the book should be of interest.

I agree that McCoy's wife should be a formidable woman. Holly Hunter would be a great choice, as would Lena Hedley as suggested above. I would much rather get a really strong even aggressive woman - a younger version of the "battleax" stereotype. My opinion is shaped by the Shadow on the Sun novel but also many brief references to her in many many novels and comics.

Kodos the Executioner!
