Power Rangers

As I rewatch, I'm finding that, his own ridiculous personal opinions on the franchise aside, there's actually not all that much about Jonathan Tzachor's approach to the season that is all that distasteful or mishandled. Even if the story is almost beat-for-beat from the Sentai, it still works by-and-large in a 'Westernized' context and offers everything that I like in a Power Rangers season: good action, interesting villains, likable characters, and decently paced progression and escalation.

Inoue brought up 3 main ideas: “A ‘so what’ attitude”, “Truly for all ages” and “Full of reworks”.

With Kakuranger, their catchprase was “Hiding among people, we slash through evil”, however, the Ninninger have no problem making a blast being ninjas. “I used the paradoxical ‘so what’ attitude as a concept, but what I meant was that their unstoppable breakthrough force could allow them to break this sense of stagnation we feel nowadays, as heroes to cheer on.

Inoue also highlighted sound. From the henshin sound of the katana (“Nin-nin-nin Nin-ninin-nin!”) to the summoning sound for the mecha (“Wasshoi Ninja!”). He said: “Sounds are very interesting. The opening theme, written by Neko Oikawa, is very hot and intense. The ending, on the other hand, has this festival feel that makes you want to dance. The opening “Let’s go Ninninger” is sung by Yohei Onishi and the ending, “Nanja Monja! Ninja Festival” is sung by Daiki Ise. The dancing steps for the ending were created by Lucky Ikeda, better known for the steps of the immensely popular anime Yokai Watch’s first ending theme “Yokai Exercise No. 1″.

Producer Naomi Takebe presented the series as not unlike a Hollywood movie with an “unthinkable ninja” concept. “We wanted to create a concept of out-there ninjas with a festival robot, dragons, fun sounds and anything fun, anything.” As for the action, Takebe said: “We are paying special attention to things like backflips and spins, things that a human is actually capable of doing. There is certainly wire work, but we wanted to take on the challenge of showing what the human body is capable of achieving.” The suit actors for AkaNinger and AoNinger are newcomers selected as the fresh blood for this season.

MMPR is the series that gets the most love with me, it had the best cast but there were other season that were very good as well. two comes to mind

I hope the reboot movie is based on MMPR.

No.

The episode was great, after four years of crappy PR the show is finally back to being good. Thank god Tzachor is fone, what a hack! So much potential wasted by that guy.
 
Oh, if only it weren't on Nick.com. Their video player doesn't get along with my computer -- the picture lags behind the sound.
 
The first episode of Dino Charge was awesome. In one episode it had better writing and acting than any of the last two shows (I only count Samurai and Megaforce as two). The characters were likeable, and the villains seem interesting. If it keeps going like this, it should be great, and not just compared to Samurai/Megaforce.
 
That was great. 100% original footage, characters with actual personality, some legitimately funny scenes, and good action. A huge step up from the disaster that was Samurai and Mega Force.
 
^All original? No Sentai footage at all? I assume that will change once the Megazords show up, right?

Since Nick.com doesn't work well for me, I'll have to check whether this is out early via On Demand.
 
^I'm pretty sure I tried it with at least a couple of different browsers and had the same problem. I think the issue is with my laptop's speed or memory or something. It's a few years old.

I suppose I could try watching it on my smartphone, but it's got a pretty small screen.

I can't confirm that the premiere was 100% original footage, but that's what the posters are saying in the episode discussion thread at Ranger Board.
 
I'm really not feeling the love for Powers from the Past, as my review - which you can see below - makes clear:
I had thought that a Power Rangers premiere couldn't get worse than S.P.D.'s Beginnings, but then this episode came along and proved me wrong.

I don't know who thought it was a good idea to just drop us into this world 'in media res' without at least a LITTLE bit of exposition, but it didn't work in Beginnings and it sure as heck didn't work here.

It's a shame that the episode turned out to be as poorly paced as it was, because it started out pretty awesome, what with Sledge's cruiser chasing the Keeper's ship, the crash onto proto-Earth, the dispersal of the Energems, and the Keeper tricking Fury with the booby-trapped Energem containment case, but once we jumped ahead to the present, everything started going downhill fast.

We know next to nothing about any of the human characters, there's little to no context for why they're doing what they're doing, and the way Tyler and Shelby just stumble into being Rangers was ludicrous even by the franchise's typical standards. Even the MotW wasn't much to write home about.

I like Judd Lynn as an EP, but this was really not a very good episode by any stretch of the imagination, and certainly pales in comparison to either of the two previous Saban Brands premiere episodes we've gotten (Origins 1 & 2 and Mega Mission).

I do like the theme song, Sledge's crew, and the Keeper, but that's about all I like right now.

While I see the resemblance, I don't think it's so bad. Besides, I think it's rather refreshing to have a mentor figure that's an actual in-the-flesh extraterrestrial (and not just a head on the wall like Gosei). We haven't had one of those since SPD.

I usually don't bother when they air episodes online early, but I might make an exception this time.

BTW, RangerCrew has uploaded a bunch of clips from the first episode on one of their Youtube channels.
 
Finally saw it. A few notes (AND SPOILERS!):

-We're only 1 episode in and the Rangers are already better developed as characters than the last two teams, and particularly Mega Force. They didn't seem generic cookie cutters or wannabe analogues of the originals.

-Red, in particular, is a much better actor than the previous two, who seemed to be models first (it helps that he already had some good acting experience, such as an appearance on American Horror Story)

-How awesomely grim is it to start the episode with the destruction of the Earth? That's pretty gutsy for an American kids' show, but in a way it evokes the premiere for Go-Busters, too. The upbeat nature of the episode and the vibrant colors in the museum overrode it, which is perfectly fine.

-There's no samba to the morph (yay!) But it's only the first episode, so who knows? The samba might become routine later on.

-Final battle of the episode was a bit short, but hey, that's fine for a first episode. And I liked how it twisted some tropes (e.g. accidentally morphing, not knowing how to handle the gun, etc)

-With that said, I really like how fluid and fast the wirework was in this episode. It evokes some of the older PR shows like Time Force, without the overkill of some of the Disney seasons.

-Only downside really -- the same sound effects they've been using since Dino Thunder, complete with the squeaky sounds and the generic laser sound. If they start reusing the same dollar store toy laser sounds that the Simpsons uses (and it's a comedy), I'm going to be pretty annoyed
