Boring

I agree with Maurice, Nimoy is just as "sold" as Shatner for the reasons he mentioned. I thought De Kelley was similarly involved too.

In fact, I think Bones had some choice lines and moments in the movie.

(Although he was given the unfortunate line of "a crew of a thousand, 10 miles tall" and that moment where he walks onto the bridge, says nothing and walks back out.)

Well, I mean, McCoy is still McCoy in TMP.

I would say he and Shatner are the energy source of the film, especially Shatner. Meanwhile, Nimoy is just as involved but his character is introspective and going through an intellectual turmoil.

But all three principal actors seem "involved" to me.

In fact, now that I think about it, I think the cast gives it its all across the board. They just don't all get a chance to really show their stuff.

Nimoy's sold. He's just playing a Spock who's retreated into himself. Bones is Bones, but, according to De in Return to Tomorrow they had him loop some of his lines to make McCoy less angry/passionate, which was arguably a mistake.

Right. It's important to remember that in the case of the Big 3, two-thirds of the trio has been out of Starfleet for more than two years, and Kirk has been stuck in a desk-job and away from the Enterprise. If the characters seem out of sorts, it's because they're re-adjusting to being together and to being back aboard the Enterprise. I never had a problem with the effort given by the actors (in this film, at least).

Maybe they just seem "off" to me because the movie isn't that good and "on" in II-IV because those are better movies.

As you yourself said:

Fair enough...its all perception, isn't it?
The blanket statements "the movie isn't that good" and "II-IV are better movies" is certainly one way of looking at things (and might even be a majority held view), but it isn't by any measure a statement of general fact as you seem to suggest, because ultimately, at the end of the day, it's all subjective isn't it. There's no guarentee that 100% of the people are going to think TMP "isn't good", nor that 100% of people are going to think "II-IV are better".

Opinions are not statements of hard fact. They're just opinions. ;)

I've never said or suggested otherwise. I'm perfectly ok w you enjoying a movie I think is mostly boring.

I think what people are taking issue with is that you started a thread by asking, "Why is TMP so boring?" Perhaps you should have asked, "Do others of you find TMP boring?" The wording of your query implies that TMP actually is boring, not that you've the opinion that it is.

Kelley's McCoy was the only who felt like the same character.

I thought Kirk and Spock seemed more like themselves near the film's conclusion. The scene in which they're standing near the Voyager satellite and discussing V'Ger's evolution seems to be the turning point. Whenever I watch that scene, I find myself thinking, "They're back," as it unfolds.

oh boo hoo...Obviously, the title of the thread is an OPINION stated in such a way as to PROVOKE discussion.

Nah, as Sran says, if you had asked the question "What does everybody think of TMP? I think it's boring", then you'd have been stating an opinion and provoking a discussion. All you did was state an opinion, and framed it in such a way as it makes it sound like everybody should be on the same page as you about TMP (ie, that it is "boring" as a statement of fact).

I know, we're circling around the semantics now. ;)

yeah, well, you started it

I always thought Kirk felt like Kirk throughout the movie, only this Kirk is going through a life change.

As soon as Shatner utters his dialogue, "Commander Sonak..." it feels like Kirk.

Same thing with Bones. His introduction in the transporter is one of my favorite moments of the film.

As a matter of fact, everyone seems like themselves but a little more experienced. Only Spock seems different, but it's obvious he's going through something major.

One thing I do think ALL fans should love (aside from the score) is the epic feel of the Enterprise. I don't think we've ever seen the Enterprise look so awesome, and full of people. The Enterprise looks like Grand Central Station. People walking briskly through corridors like they're on a serious, time sensitive task. I love that!

Though I recognize its flaws, I love TMP but it's not for everybody.

But why is TMP 'boring' to you? What is it, specifically, that you find boring about it? Give us something to work with. Perhaps if you provided more in the way of those kinds of details to begin with, we'd have a discussion going on now. That's the kind of meat in a thread that provokes discussion.

Allow me to prompt you: you find it boring. We get that. *Why* does it bore you?

I've provided several examples of why I think the movie is boring. Read through the thread.

My good sir, if you would read through the thread, you will see where I have stated why I think this movie is boring.

The one time he really seemed like Kirk to me was when he and Chekov shared a smile when the Enterprise went to warp. One of my favorite moments. McCoy was certainly himself. As for the others, frankly, they didn't have enough to do for me to get a feel for them.

Other than in TWOK, I'm not completely sure when Spock was ever really "Spock" in a Trek movie. Seems there was always something up with him, not just in TMP.

And yes, the Enterprise was beautiful, inside and out.
