If you don't like the characters, I don't know what to tell you. Crichton and Aeryn and D'Argo and Pilot and Scorpius and Stark and Crais among others are all some of the best characters ever written for television. Season 3 is gut wrenching.
Trying again to get into Farscape

For myself, I watched the first few episodes, then ditched it.
I came back sometime close to the end of season 1 (probably around Nerve now it comes to mind). I think season 4 is probably the one I least like, but even so got the whole series a while back. I'll probably have to give it a run through again, but I know it's not to everyones taste.

"The Way We Weren't" is also one of the first great episodes. Kind of like "Duet" for DS9 or "The Measure of a Man" for TNG. It showed just what the show was capable of.
I unabashedly love FS. Not all its experiments worked, but it was never boring. It was always colorful and eccentric and never played it safe. And Crichton and Aeryn have probably the best love story in the history of science fiction television. And then you have great characters like Chiana and Scorpius and Crais. Okay, there was also Noranti, but let's just forget about her.

I'm plodding through season one, about six episodes in. I 've only seen about four later episodes, I think, but I fund them very amusing way back when. That and some familiarity with the episode descriptions (probably from SFX or something) keeps me going. Might speed it up a bit given the talk about episode 13.
I love that episode. For all the problems the show had (which eventually made me stop watching), "The Way We Weren't" is just awesome. If the show had more writing of that quality, it would have been amazing.
FS probably had the best body-switching episode ever. I fell of my chair laughing when John's mind was in Erin's body, and the first thing he had to do was check out her boobs. It was just so... natural.
If I had a favorite episode of Farscape, that one would definately be it. I just wish I could remember the title. I don't have that show committed to memory like Star Trek.

As many have said, if you get through S1 and aren't enjoying it yet, the show probably isn't for you. Personally, I think it's pretty good after the first 5 or 6 episodes, but, I definitely think it's pretty great in the second half of S1.
And yea, to echo what Dr Funkenstein said, it's very surprising to see someone say the characters weren't deep or sympathetic. One initial turn off people have is "Puppets", but, most very quickly stop seeing the puppets and only see the characters, because the characters are so great and have such depth.

I discovered Farscape (finally) during my senior year of college while it was in late-night reruns on SciFi (2002-2003ish?). Really enjoyed what I saw and started collecting the Starburst Edition DVDs. Unfortunately, they were pretty hard to get my hands on at the time so I only wound up being able to see season one and most of season two.
When the entire series got re-released on DVD in a beautiful box set a few years ago, RedFenix and Top41 got together and purchased it for me on my birthday and I managed to finally sit down and finish watching all of it last summer. Brilliant show, but I can also see why it might turn some off or just be viewed as "going off the deep end."
I've sort of held off watching "The Peacekeeper Wars" only because I dont want to be done with the show just yet... but I'm definitely a fan.
When the entire series got re-released on DVD in a beautiful box set a few years ago, RedFenix and Top41 got together and purchased it for me on my birthday and I managed to finally sit down and finish watching all of it last summer. I was annoyed with the 2-year wait after the show got canceled for "The Peacekeeper Wars" to come out. How can you not have watched it yet?!
LOL, agreed. When people have made threads of their first time watch, I have commented (when they got to the final episode of S4) "Now, you have to wait for two years to watch Peacekeeper Wars, so you can get the full effect we had watching it in first run"

I watched the finale in my parents' basement. My mom, who never watched the show before, decided to watch the finale upstairs in the living room just to see what the fuss was about. When the credits rolled and I came upstairs, her first words were, "You must be so pissed right now."

I also loved that they made themselves name tags to remember who was in who's body--which is exactly what you would do in those circumstances!
