Justin Lin is directing Star Trek XIII

See how influential it still is four hundred years from now, and you may have something. Speaking only for myself, I'm not so sure that I'd want to bet too much.

I have a hard time imagining much that would last into 400 years from today. Entertainment has been exponentially increasing, and I think it's a lot harder to make that kind of mark, especially when most work is derivative anyways. The next four centuries are likely to involve a lot more change than the last four as well.

Heck, I imagine The Simpsons will have a larger and more long-term impact on the general culture than Star Trek has had when everything is said and done.

If you feel Trek is such a trifle, why do you dedicate so much of your time to hang out and post on a fan-forum like this?

That doesn't even make any sense. Am I suppose to automatically elevate Trek to some mythical status because I like it? It is a mostly entertaining TV and movie franchise.

I'm still of the opinion that some people watch Star Trek because they think it makes them look smart or cultured. It does neither.

Indeed, and I feel the same way. It's entertainment and a hobby (one of a few), not a frackin' religion.

Makes you wonder what the big deal is about dune buggy chases violating the Prime Directive and how invalid the new movies are since they aren't set in the prime universe among other things.

Aw, you had to make it personal, when by now you ought to know that you're not supposed to do that.

Warning for trolling. Comments to PM.

Everyone else, let's return to a topic which is not mos' little swipe.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. In around that time, it's been prophesized that Earth will suffer the great Star Trek Wars anyway.

(Not to be confused with the Star Wars Trek.)

In the SW universe the motivation makes total sense, because Force visions are a real thing and dark side Force powers exist.

Sorry, I don't see how force visions and the dark side automatically make contradictory motivations make sense. You are just making an argument from assertion.

It will be interesting to see how different Lin's Trek will be from Abrams' Trek. After all, Wrath of Khan was very different in tone and style from TMP. Lin may do a soft reboot. Perhaps, we have seen the last lens flare?

I quite like them to be honest, they give the movies their own recognisable visual style, and I only really notice them when I go looking for them. I hope they stay.

I didn't have a problem with the Lens Flares except in the first movie on the bridge scenes, that was too much, and detracted from my ability to appreciate the bridge, with all the lens flare against the stark white, but, anywhere else in the movie, and STiD was fine, so, I have no probem if the Lens flares continue in this manner

JJ's lens flares had a cultural impact surpassing any other piece of culture ever released. The nerdrage surrounding them is unprecedented.
