TMP Myths Debunked via Return to Tomorrow and Beyond

Bracketed text within a quotation is commonly used to indicate author inclusions or edits, but if that's not clear enough I'll just footnote henceforth.

To my understanding no 70mm prints were ever made, and I should have included "to my knowledge".

Back to 2001, now that I think about it, I believe someone does talk about that film in one of the interview segments in regards to "clarity of ambiguity" re the ending of TMP v. 2001. I'll try to find the specific quote.

I think it's hilarious that in the book Return to Tomorrow, there's a whole section on Doohan's mustache, Nichelle Nichols Afro, and Shatner's hair.

I think that's a Harold Livingston quote regarding the ending of 2001.
Your are correct.

I was very impressed with the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and I aimed for that power. I wasn't stealing anything, in fact I was trying to improve on it a little by making it just a bit less murky. I wanted you to have in this ending a sharper delineation of what you didn't have in 2001. I wanted a "clarity of ambiguity."
Harold Livingston, screenplay [writer] (p. 274)

On page 205, Linda DeScenna refers to a planned "Making of Star Trek: TMP" television special that Paramount was shooting a bunch of behind-the-scenes documentary material for during principal photography (including of the backstage crew), but it was ultimately never broadcast. Wonder if any of this footage showed up years later in repurposed form in other Paramount-produced specials (and/or on the DVDs/Blu-Rays)? Something like this would surely be considered a historical treasure-trove today.

I missed the initial run of this book, but I'll make a point of ordering a copy when they announce availability for the second printing.

I also missed getting a copy on the initial run, but creaturefeatures.com indicates that a second printing will become available in either February or March. This time around, I intend to order a copy right off. This sounds like a rather fascinating book.

It's possible some of that was used in the ShoWest trailer.

A 10 minute short film used to be available on YouTube. It looks like it's been pulled, but this clip still is available.

Persis Khambatta was a beautiful woman with a beautiful, fashionable hairdo, and she knew it. I'm not surprised that she cried while it was being cut off. But she also had a beautiful head, smooth and even with no odd bumps. I'm therefore also not surprised she liked the look when it was finished.

But once the film was finished she grew it back in as quickly as it would grow. That was obvious from the first frame of her next project.

I'm fascinated by the blog's analysis of how Shatner touches his hair. That would have sold me if I weren't already a believer in STT.

It's nice to see a verbatim account of one of Nichols' earlier versions of how she decided to stay on Trek. People who've been following this since the early 70s know every well how that legend has evolved. The likelihood that she'd skip the King encounter in favor of Roddenberry in any telling of the story to a journalist is nil.

Are we to infer that her famous MLK story is a faaaaaaaaake?
