TMNT Season Finale

i love the 2003 series. even the later seasons which were pretty wacky. i think i'm one of the few people who liked Fast Forward.

I actually got kind of bored with it by episode 3 and decided to let the DVR accumulate the rest for now. But I guess the really interesting stuff didn't kick in until later.

She fled with the Turtles to her house in the woods, just like in the middle of the first live action movie.

Funny, that's what came to my mind as well, how it roughly parallels the first LA movie. Haven't seen it in ages, but wasn't one of the Turtles badly injured (effectively in a coma) in the movie as well? Probably Raph' given his hot headed nature.

Actually, I think the "retreat to April's family farm in a VW Bus" was strait out of an early comic before the 90 film. I'm not 100% certain though.

Yeah, it was a pull from the original Eastman/Laird comics, where it was Leo who was injured by a Foot Clan out for revenge for the death of Shredder. The same storyline introduced Casey Jones as he busts in to save the Turtles' asses. (Amusingly, Raph already knows him without any explanation whatsoever, but Donnie is like, "Who?" :D)

The 1990s movie actually lifted certain elements from various Eastman/Laird comic book stories and combined them together. As well as liberally taking bits from the original '87 cartoon (like April being a reporter rather than Baxter Stockman's assistant).

I've been pretty impressed with the Nick TMNT show. It feels like a nice update on the concept. Nothing makes me feel old more than the realization that 6 year olds are into something I was into 25+ years ago. ;)

Casey Jones was first introduced in the Raphael one-shot "My, Myself, and I" where he meets Raphael but none of the other turtles.

Ah, right. :) :techman: Well that explains that (I never read that particular one-shot). My experience of the Mirage comics was through compilation volumes, that tended to collect together many of the most significant stories, but obviously must not have included everything.

I do remember thinking at the time how very strange it was, this new character suddenly coming in and none of the guys recognizing him except Raph.

It does underline how faithful most of the TMNT adaptations have been to the original source, though: they haven't tended to mess about with big events like this too much, they mainly only differ in the way they tell the story. :)

Well, more or less. The first movie, the '03 series, and the current series all did the "retreat to April's cabin" story, but the '87 series didn't. The original show was about as far from the comics as you can get, but every subsequent adaptation has drawn on the show in some way, even if it's just the color-coded bandanas.

The story is Raphael running in to Casey who's beating up some crooks and Raph fights him to make him stop. Sounds familiar? :)

;) I know I've seen their meeting in various tellings (not least the 1990 movie), but I know I never read it in the original Mirage comics, so I must have just missed out on that one. :)

episode 9 which airs 25th Jan 2015 is called "Return to New York"... about f**king time!!

Which is the same episode title as a 3-parter from the 2003 series that'll be airing tomorrow night, exactly a month earlier. I wonder if they're both drawing on a story title from the comics.

I want to see which kiddie cartoon they will spoof this season. Season 1 was "Space Heroes" which was a spoof of Filmation's Star Trek... Season 2 was spoofing Voltron.

Well, it looks like Nicktoons' marathon of the '03 series only covers the first two seasons. I'd like to see the following three (counting The Lost Episodes as season 5, of course), but unfortunately they're hard to find. Netflix doesn't have a complete set, and my local libraries can't help. Hopefully this marathon did well enough that Nicktoons will run the rest of the series sometime.

It was a pretty good show, although with some annoying quirks. Its grasp of what ninjas actually were was pretty poor, pretty much conflating them with samurai, with Leonardo constantly talking about bushido and honor. Bushido was the honor code of the samurai, the noble class corresponding to European knights, whereas ninjas were commoners who served as mercenaries, spies, assassins, arsonists, and terrorists -- professions that have little use for honor or fair play. The "Secret Origins" flashbacks also claim that ninjas already existed in 11th-century Japan, when in fact they didn't emerge until the 15th century, with perhaps some 14th-century antecedents. And in the "Big Brawl" 4-parter, I had to put up with their relentless mispronunciation of daimyo as "damiyo," not to mention the way the actor playing Miyamoto Usagi (from Usagi Yojimbo) mispronounced the names of his own character (as "Miyamato") and his friend Gennosuke (as "Jennosuke").

Also, I really, really hate the '03 series' theme song, especially that shouted "One! Two! Three! Four!" refrain. I wish they'd aired it without the original commercial bumpers that repeated that bit incessantly.

Finally, finally, finally, "Return to New York".

But I had some big problems.

We finally learn what's going on with the Krang Invasion. They successfully conquered NYC. And then just sat there. And the world knows it happened. And didn't do anything. Hunh?

Why isn't the US trying to reclaim the most important city in the country? If they can tell there's only 200 people left in the city (satellite IR, etc) why not nuke with a hydrogen bomb? Why isn't the WORLD doing anything?

And boy, it sure was incredibly convenient that Spinter managed to elude the Foot for the three months he was alone and injured, but the second the Turtles show up THAT'S when they finally manage to catch him.

And Shredder has been sitting in his tower for three months doing... what, exactly? Looking for Karai? He said he's going to turn on the Krang. How, exactly?

And I realize this is a kid's show, but christ, they're doing a ninja infiltration of an enemy conquered city to rescue their father and Mikey is shouting his damn fool head off at every given opportunity. Come on.

At least Leo's knee was magically 100% in this episode ;)

Rather surprising ending to this week's episode. They brought back the big Russian guy and the really annoying invisible guy in the purple Mohawk (except without the invisibility) -- and at the end, they were mutated into Rocksteady and Bebop! Or at least approximate equivalents, though I'm sure Mikey will find some contrived excuse to give them those names pretty soon.

And Karai is finally back, but we didn't get much progress on her arc.
