Nog.

Kobayshi Maru

Commodore
Commodore
Nog wasn't a jerk with girls in season 1 (e.g. The Storyteller) , so what happened between season 1 and season 3 to turn him into one? Any ideas? Looks like a plot convenient change to me.

That is one thing about teenage boys. Their moods and actions change so much and so quickly that there isn't a lot of need to explain behaviour changes.

He read about Kirk and his exploits at Starfleet Academy and wanted to follow in his footsteps.

It's not easy being a Ferengi. Nog's father wasn't a jerk by human standards, and apparently that's a mortal sin in the Ferengi society, so Nog wanted to be a good Ferengi and despise his father...

But that's something that would only kick in when Nog got to the age to launch a career as an independent Ferengi. Prior to that, he wouldn't have to mind the "Ferengi opinion" much, especially when stranded on that space station far away from everybody. But then everybody came to that station ("The Nagus") and suddenly it wasn't just Unca Quark and Dad, it was the whole society looking down on Nog.

Rom's ex-wife probably chewed his food then swallowed it, and Nog wanted to make sure he didn't turn out like that.

If you think about it, Rom was a "typical" Ferengi in the first season ("little lady, little lady"...."hew-mon school").

Nog was young, unsure and intimidated by the Paqu representative in "The Storyteller". Later when Jake fixed him up on an actual date, Nog probably thought he had to assert his mannliness, which to us was jerky behavior but, as Sisko pointed out, perfectly normal for a Ferengi male.

This perfectly sums my own thoughts on the matter.

Quark has six middle names: up, down, strange, charm, bottom, and top. Coincidentally that's also the six ways he likes to get oomox...

Nog may have became more of a jerk during his run but he was definitely a useful and loyal officer. Not only did he lose his leg in the line of duty, but he did that kick ass loop-d-loop in the Defiant in that last assault on Cardassia, and regardless that his jokes got harder, he was always a good friend to Jake.

Nog was a character that wasn't relevant much, and the writers wanted to do stuff with him. I wish they had that same kind of energy for Jake Sisko. Making him a writer was a huge mistake; he became the new Morn with more dialogue.

Did you know that Morn was actually a tribute to Cheers' Norm and it isn't a coincidence that his name is an anagram of the latter's?
